Malaga vs Girona Preview
The race for automatic promotion is now over in the Segunda Division with Espanyol and Mallorca sealing top two positions. However the battle for play-off places is really heating up, and that’s largely due to the form of Girona who are bidding to extend their impressive winning streak this Thursday when they travel to the Costa del Sol.
They are up against a Malaga side that is on course for a safe mid-table finish. They’d perhaps have settled for that given some of the off-field problems that have plagued the club over the past few years. Sergio Pellicer has brought a degree of stability to them since taking over in January 2020. He has won two more games than he has lost during that period, a decent return in difficult circumstances.
Malaga will already be looking ahead to next season. With eight players currently on loan at the club, it’s inevitable that there will be plenty of comings and goings and they are likely to look to the loan market again as they get ready for 2021/22. They’ll be hoping the return of fans to La Rosaleda next term will help spark an improval in their home form with only two clubs in this league having a worse record than their average of 1.16 points per home game this term.
Girona will fancy they are well placed to take advantage of that. The Catalans come into this game in fine form following 5 straight league wins which have seen them shoot up to 5th place having previously looked outsiders to make the play-offs. They need to end well to ensure they see off at least one of Rayo Vallecano or Sporting Gijon to seal a top six finish and their current momentum could make them very dangerous opponents in those play-offs.
They won a key home game against fellow promotion hopefuls Sporting last time out. Juanpe’s goal was enough to settle things at Montilivi while they cruised to a 4-1 win at UD Logrones in their most recent away game with Christhian Stuani netting twice. The Uruguayan hasn’t been as prolific this season as he was last, with injuries playing some role in that, but he is still a major asset for Girona to have in their arsenal at this point in the campaign, particularly with some of the teams around them looking very short on goals.
Head to Head
- Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 2 Malaga Wins, 2 Girona Wins, 1 Draw.
- Malaga have won the last 2 meetings to nil including a 1-0 win at Montilivi earlier this term.
- Girona have failed to score on their 2 league trips to Malaga this century.
Malaga vs Girona Predictions
Score Prediction: Malaga 1-3 Girona
Girona are the form team in the Segunda Division right now and you have to fancy them to make it 6 wins on the spin here. Malaga are rarely convincing at home and don’t have anything to play for now which could see standards slip slightly and the visitors are more than capable of taking advantage.
