Atletico Madrid vs Osasuna Preview
Atletico Madrid have the opportunity to win the Spanish title on Sunday in what will be a fascinating afternoon at the top and bottom of the table. They will definitely finish above Barcelona if they win this game and would be crowned champions on the day should they win and Real Madrid drop points in what is a tough away game against Athletic Club.
In truth that is a perfectly plausible scenario so the champagne will certainly be on ice at the Wanda Metropolitano. Diego Simeone’s men won’t be taking anything for granted though and whatever the other clubs do, they now know they will win the title if they win their final two games having got through their toughest remaining test against Real Sociedad in midweek.
For a while, it looked as though it would be a surprisingly comfortable evening for Los Rojiblancos. They found plenty of space behind the visiting defence and took advantage in the 1st Half with goals from Angel Correa and Yannick Carrasco putting them in control. Real Sociedad came back into it after the break though as Atleti, as is their way, made things hard for themselves but they did ultimately seal a 2-1 win.
This will be a very different kind of game. Osasuna will defend deeper and not allow Atletico Madrid as much room to play in. Patience may be the key for the home team as a result. Despite having very little to left to play for, Osasuna have ended the season pretty well with 4 wins from their last 7 games including a 3-2 victory over Cadiz in midweek.
On a more positive note for those hoping for an Atleti title win, Osasuna’s record this season against the top sides is not good. They’ve taken just 2 points from 10 games against current top six teams (at the time of writing) and that’s a pretty poor return in a season where most of the big clubs have been vulnerable to some degree. They’ve already suffered defeats to nil away to Barcelona, Sevilla and Real Madrid.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Atletico Madrid Wins, 1 Osasuna Win.
- Atleti have won all of the last 5 meetings by at least 2 goals.
- They won 3-1 at Osasuna earlier in the season.
- They’ve also won 5 of the last 6 meetings in Madrid.
Thomas Lemar is expected to be Atleti’s only absentee here.
Nacho Vidal is suspended for the visitors. Ruben Martinez is sidelined through injury.
Predicted Atleti Starting Lineup:
Oblak – Hermoso, Felipe, Savic, Trippier – Carrasco, Saul, Koke, Llorente – Suarez, Correa (4-4-2)
Predicted Osasuna Starting Lineup:
Herrera – Sanchez, Hernandez, Garcia, Ramalho – Brasanac, Torro, Moncayola – Torres, Budimir, Barja (4-3-3)
Atletico Madrid vs Osasuna Prediction: 1-0 Atletico Madrid
This is likely to be a tighter match than the one we saw on Wednesday at the Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico Madrid will have to work for their chances but they came out and showed exactly the right approach in midweek and there were no real signs of jitters despite a Second Half where they were put under pressure. They ought to edge out Osasuna here.
