Valencia vs Eibar Preview
Valencia and Eibar meet on matchday 37 in a game which could end with the Basque minnow suffering relegation from the top flight. That will depend on results elsewhere but with Barcelona their final opponents, Eibar really need to win this match to give themselves a fighting chance of staying up.
In theory, Valencia are the kind of opponents you want to play at this stage. They are mid-table with nothing to play and have recently appointed a caretaker boss in the form of Voro. Some of their players may be eyeing up moves away this summer though with the club in crisis off the pitch and that may prove a source of motivation for some members of the home side.
To give them credit, they did seal an emphatic win in an important match last time out at Mestalla. A 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid, in Voro’s first game in his latest spell as caretaker boss, basically sealed safety with Los Che still looking over their shoulder heading into that game. His side were competitive at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in midweek but ultimately lost 1-0 and look on course for one of their lowest ever top flight finishes.
Eibar will sense they do have a real opportunity in this game. They looked down and out a couple of weeks back but back-to-back wins over fellow strugglers Alaves and Getafe changed all that. A win over Betis on Thursday would have lifted them off the bottom but they had to settle for a point and only just got that with Sergi Enrich scoring a late leveller.
So, Eibar head into this game in 20th place and 3 points from safety. Lose here, and they will be relegated if Huesca get a point in their game away to Betis or Real Valladolid beat Real Sociedad. Even if they win, it’s still highly probable that they will need a result in their final game against Barcelona which clearly won’t be easy, although it’s very possible the Catalans will be out of title contention by then.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Valencia Win, 2 Eibar Wins, 3 Draws.
- Valencia have won 3 of the last 6 meetings at Mestalla including a 1-0 win last term.
- There have only been 2 goals in total in the last 3 meetings in Valencia.
- The sides drew 0-0 in the Basque Country early this term.
Valencia ought to be at full strength for this one.
Sergi Enrich is a minor doubt but will surely be risked given the importance of the game. Alejandro Pozo is also rated doubtful.
Predicted Valencia Starting Lineup:
Cillessen – Diakhaby, Guillamon, Gabriel – Gaya, Wass, Soler, Piccini – Kang-In – Guedes, Gomez (3-4-1-2)
Predicted Eibar Starting Lineup:
Dmitrovic – Cote, Arbilla, Oliveira, Correa – Exposito, Atienza, Diop, Gil – Enrich, Garcia (4-4-2)
Valencia vs Eibar Prediction: Eibar to Win 2-0
Eibar have shown plenty of spirit and have also produced good performances as well as good results of late. Valencia’s season can’t end soon enough and while their home record has been pretty good since the turn of the year, Eibar’s extra intensity and motivation could be significant factors in this game and the visitors may get the win they so badly need.
