Real Valladolid vs Villarreal Preview

Thursday’s LaLiga action kicks off at the Jose Zorrilla with another game that will have an impact on which teams ultimately drop into the Segunda Division. Real Valladolid are in desperate need of a bit of inspiration as they look to put three points on the board which could prove the difference between survival and relegation.

Winning games isn’t something that has come naturally to them of late. They haven’t done so in 9 league matches now with their last victory coming over Getafe in early March. Sergio will at least take heart from his side’s ability to compete in recent games against top sides such as Sevilla and Barcelona. But for late goals, they’d have taken 4 points from those fixtures so they have shown they can compete with the elite.

Real Valladolid come into this game following on from a heavy 3-0 defeat at Valencia. The scoreline doesn’t quite tell the whole story with the visitors actually having 19 attempts to Los Che’s 6, as well as 60% possession in the game. However it’s only really results that matter at this stage in the season and Sergio will know that his team will most likely need at least one more victory if they want to be at this level again next term.

They don’t have easy fixtures and they are likely to face a stronger Villarreal than Celta Vigo did at the weekend. On the back of their Europa League Semi-Final success, Unai Emery opted to make wholesale changes for that game, resting key players such as Gerard Moreno and Pau Torres. In a game overshadowed by the referee, Celta emerged as 4-2 victors in the end.

Should Villarreal win the Europa League, their final league position won’t really matter but they will be clear underdogs in the Final against Manchester United. It seems likely they will rest players on the final weekend in preparation for that so it’s vital they deliver in these next two games to ensure that at the very least they are in the newly formed UEFA Conference League next season.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Villarreal Wins, 2 Real Valladolid Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Villarreal won the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this season.
  • However they’ve not won on any of their last 3 visits to the Jose Zorrilla.
  • The last two meetings in Valladolid have both been drawn.

Team News

Fabian Orellana is a significant injury absentee for the hosts while Raul Garcia also misses out again.

Mario Gaspar and Geronimo Rulli serve bans after seeing red despite being only on the bench at the weekend. Samu Chukwueze is out injured.

Predicted Real Valladolid Starting Lineup:

Jimenez – Olaza, Yamiq, Sanchez, Perez – Emeterio, Fernandez, Mesa – Plano, Weissman, Hervias (4-3-3)

Predicted Villarreal Starting Lineup:

Asenjo – Pedraza, Torres, Albiol, Pena – Parejo, Capoue, Trigueros – Gomez, Alcacer, Gerard (4-3-3)

Real Valladolid vs Villarreal Prediction: Villarreal to win 2-1

We should see a much stronger eleven from Villarreal here and they may have just too much for Real Valladolid who have only won 3 home games all season. Unai Emery’s side have been pretty good on their travels and will be determined to seal victory here as they pursue European football.
