Mallorca vs Alcorcon Preview

Mallorca vs Alcorcon match

Mallorca’s bid for an immediate return to LaLiga continues this weekend. Should Almeria lose at home to Albacete on Saturday, they’d be promoted with victory here but either way they’ll be in a very good position to secure top flight football again if they can see off Alcorcon.

While Espanyol have ultimately cruised to promotion, Mallorca have made slightly harder work of it despite having spent almost the entire season in the top two. There were some real jitters starting to creep in after back-to-back defeats against lowly Castellon and Sabadell but Luis Garcia’s side have bounced back pretty well and they weren’t really made to pay by the teams immediately below them in the table anyway.

They come into this following a 2-1 home win over Mirandes followed by a draw at Malaga last Saturday. Again it wasn’t a vintage display but Lago Junior’s strike sealed a point and kept them ticking along towards that ultimate goal with only 4 games in the season remaining. They’ll fancy their chances of recording a fourth straight home win here.

This is also a very important game for the visitors. Alcorcon head into this weekend just one point outside the relegation zone and it really is tight at the bottom making it very tough to call which four teams will drop down into the third tier. That’s always a painful fall for any club and while Alcorcon are perhaps punching above their weight even at this level, this is their 11th straight Segunda Division campaign and they have very much become an established second tier outfit.

Their campaign started very poorly and saw coach Mere leave with the team bottom of the table in November. Things have improved under Juan Antonio Anquela who has actually won more games than he’s lost. They’ve won 3 out of their last 5 to seriously boost their chances of staying in the league, including victories in each of their last 2 away games against Lugo and Albacete.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Mallorca Wins, 2 Alcorcon Wins.
  • Mallorca have won their last 3 home games against Alcorcon to nil.
  • They also won 2-0 in the reverse fixture in Madrid earlier this season.

Mallorca vs Alcorcon Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-0 Alcorcon

Mallorca aren’t on the absolute top of their game right now and it’s clear that the pressure of being so close to the end has got to them a bit. Even during their better periods, they weren’t a free-scoring team, but they’ve invariably had a bit too much quality for most teams in the league and that’s likely to be the case again here, despite Alcorcon’s reasonably strong form.
