Huesca’s battle for survival will take another twist for the better or worse on Wednesday as the host Athletic Club at El Alcoraz. They find themselves in the bottom three heading into this game but a victory would make a world of difference to their chances of beating the drop.

4 defeats from their last 5 matches have not helped matters but their rivals have not really made them pay and they are still very much in with a fighting chance. Victory over Basque opposition in the shape of Real Sociedad in their most recent home game ought to at least breed some confidence heading into this. A late own goal sealed three points in that game they were on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat at Cadiz at the weekend with Gaston Silva finding his own net late in the Second Half.

Huesca have arguably got more quality than some of the teams around them but at this stage in the campaign, performances couldn’t be any less important. It’s all about holding your nerve and delivering under pressure. They travel to Betis after this which will be tough so this is a game they really need to win.

Athletic’s hopes of European qualification now look very slim indeed despite a good run of recent results. They’ve gone 8 without defeat in LaLiga, winning 2 of their last 4 but too many draws has been the story of their season and the reason they are ultimately likely to fall just short of the Europa/Conference League places.

It already feels like Marcelino has been in charge for an eternity. He’s crammed three cup finals into his four months in charge of the Bilbao club. Athletic will reflect on this season with mixed feelings and their mid-table league position will ultimately be a mere footnote on a campaign that has delivered silverware in the form of the Supercopa but also Copa del Rey heartbreak.

Head to Head

  • Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 4 Athletic Win, 1 Draw.
  • Athletic have won all of the last 4 meetings.
  • They won the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this term.
  • Huesca’s only result against Athletic came via a 2-2 draw on their first league visit to San Mames in 2018.

Team News

Pablo Insua and Luisinho are sidelined through injury for the home team.

Yuri Berchiche, Ander Capa and Iker Muniain are significant injury absentees for Athletic.

Predicted Huesca Starting Lineup:

Fernandez – Siovas, Pulido, Vavro – Galan, Seoane, Mosquera, Ferreiro, Maffeo – Sandro, Mir (3-5-2)

Predicted Athletic Club Starting Lineup:

Simon – Balenziaga, Martinez, Nunez, De Marcos – Morcillo, Lopez, Vesga, Berenguer – Williams, Garcia (4-4-2)

Huesca vs Athletic Club Prediction: 1-1 Draw

This is a tough game for Huesca to have at a time when they desperately need a win. Athletic just don’t lose many football matches and their sequence of 6 draws from their last 8 in LaLiga suggests that this one may end all square. That’s not really enough for Huesca but if a few other results go their way this week, neither would it be an absolute disaster.
