Perhaps the pick of the midweek games in LaLiga sees leaders Atletico Madrid face the strongest of their remaining opponents as they welcome Real Sociedad to the Wande Metropolitano. Three wins would seal the title for Diego Simeone and his team and victory here would be a simply massive step in that direction.
In the end, nothing changed on what promised to be a decisive weekend in the Spanish title race as the top four drew their matches. That was good news for Atleti who left Camp Nou with a goalless draw and as the only team whose destiny is fully in their own hands.
They face Osasuna and Real Valladolid after this game and while on paper they should fancy their chances of winning all those matches, it is worth noting they’ve not won 3 on the spin in LaLiga since January. In this season of twists and turns, you certainly wouldn’t bet against there being more before the silverware is finally handed out but right now Atleti are certainly in pole position.
Their task here is perhaps aided by the fact that Real Sociedad have now secured European qualification. Betis’ win over Granada on Monday night ensured that but they have work to do to make sure it is the Europa League and not the Conference League which they end up in.
They take pretty good form into this match with 3 wins from their last 4 outings in LaLiga. The most recent was a 2-0 victory over Elche in Donostia on Friday night. Goals from Aritz Elustondo and Mikel Oyarzabal ultimately secured victory after Elche had left them frustrated for more than hour despite the visitors being reduced to 10 men in just the 11th minute.
