Levante vs Barcelona Preview
The late game in LaLiga on Tuesday sees the latest installment in this fascinating title race. Barcelona need both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid to slip up if they are going to stand a chance of winning the title. However they will go top with victory here and that would just up the pressure slightly on their rivals who play on Wednesday and Thursday.
In theory this is a good fixture for Barcelona to have right now. Levante are in mid-table with nothing to play for and they’ve been in very poor form of late. Indeed their return of 4 points from their last 8 games is the worst in the division and they’d lost 4 on the bounce before a 2-2 draw at Alaves last time out.
That was at least a slightly more encouraging showing and it would have been three points had Joselu’s late effort crept over the line for the relegation-threatened hosts. Paco Lopez will be disappointed though with his side’s recent displays particularly at home where they’ve lost three on the spin, having only previously suffered two home league defeats all season.
The Ciutat de Valencia has been something of a graveyard for the big teams in recent years and Barcelona have lost on 3 of their last 4 visits in all competitions. We’ve seen Levante execute some excellent counter-attacking football at times in these kinds of games and Barca will need to be wary of that here.
Their title hopes have suffered some serious blows in recent weeks. That inexplicable home defeat to Granada and frustrating weekend draw against Atleti mean they are now relying on favours elsewhere. Fresh reports this week suggest Ronald Koeman’s job may be on the line despite something of a regeneration project that has taken place this season with some younger players emerging. At the very least, he needs a strong end to the season and with both Madrid clubs looking vulnerable too, three wins may yet be enough for the Catalans in this finely poised title race.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Levante Wins, 4 Barcelona Wins.
- Levante have won 3 of the last 4 meetings in Valencia.
- They’ve recorded 5-4, 2-1 and 3-1 wins during that period but did lose 5-0 in this fixture in 2018.
- Barcelona won 1-0 when the sides met in the reverse fixture in December 2020.
Sergio Postigo, Nikola Vukcevic and Nemanja Radoja are doubts for Levante who may look to give some fringe players a chance with little left to play for.
Sergio Busquets is a doubt for Barcelona having gone off injured at the weekend. Teenagers Pedri and Ilaix Moriba may both start in midfield if he misses out.
Predicted Levante Starting Lineup:
Cardenas – Clerc, Pier, Vezo, Miramon – Bardhi, Melero, Malsa, De Frutos – Morales, Roger (4-4-2)
Predicted Barcelona Starting Lineup:
Ter Stegen – Lenglet, Pique, Araujo – Alba, Pedri, Moriba, De Jong, Roberto – Messi, Griezmann (3-5-2)
Levante vs Barcelona Prediction: 4-2 Barcelona
There are usually a few goals in this fixture with Levante famously recording a 5-4 win late in 2017/18 season to deny Barcelona an unbeaten campaign. Levante are badly out of form though and recent opponents have opened them up quite easily which suggests Barcelona may well do the same to record a much needed three points.
