Elche vs Alaves Preview
With three games to go in LaLiga, there are six teams battling to avoid the three relegation positions. It’s genuinely too tight to call and as the only remaining clash between two teams in the bottom six, this is a simply massive football match for both clubs.
Elche will climb out of the relegation zone if they can win it. Dubbed the weakest team in the division by pundits for much of the season, they are still very much alive and fighting, and have every chance of staying up with a slightly more favourable set of remaining fixtures than some of their relegation rivals.
However they have lost 4 of their last 6 with a 1-0 home win over Levante their only recent triumph. Fran Escriba has sparked something in this team with their only home defeat so far under his leadership coming against leaders Atletico Madrid. Even in that game, they missed a late penalty which would have rescued a point but they can’t afford to be wasteful here on a high stakes night for all involved.
Alaves have also made a recent coaching change in a bid to save their top flight status. Abelardo was shown the door with Javi Calleja coming in on 5th April. So far, it has been proven to be a wise move with just 1 defeat in 6 matches under Calleja. However there will be a real sense that they’ve failed to make the most of their last two fixtures.
Calleja’s honeymoon period came to a crashing halt in the form of a 3-0 defeat to bottom club Eibar. They then responded with a 2-2 draw at home to a woefully out of form Levante side. It took an 87th minute Joselu goal to even rescue a point so some doubts will be creeping back in for the Basques as they prepare for this one and their average of just 0.65 points per game on the road this season won’t breed much confidence either.

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:
Gazzaniga – Josema, Verdu, Calvo, Barragan – Fidel, Mfulu, Marcone, Morente – Carrillo, Boye (4-4-2)
Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:
Pacheco – Duarte, Lejeune, Laguardia, Navarro – Rioja, Pina, Pons, Jota – Joselu, Perez (4-4-2)
Elche vs Alaves Prediction: 1-0 Elche
Only Eibar has a worse away record than Alaves this season and memories of that heavy defeat at Ipurua will still be fresh. Elche have been very competitive at home since the change in coach and they may just have enough about them to edge what is a vital match for both sides.
