Villarreal vs Celta Vigo Preview

Villarreal match action

Villarreal and Celta Vigo meet in what could be one of the most entertaining games this weekend in LaLiga. The Yellow Submarine come into this following perhaps the most significant victory in their history after seeing off Arsenal to reach their first ever European Final on Thursday night.

Unai Emery took revenge on his old club as his team put in a composed display across the two legs to see off the Premier League side and set up a date with Manchester United in Gdansk. That will be three days after the final match of LaLiga 2021/22 and Emery will be eager to ensure his team secures European qualification before that trip to Real Madrid on MD38.

That should be a very achievable goal. They are currently 7 points clear of Granada in 8th but only one above Real Betis. Right now they could end up in any one of the three European competitions next season. Victory in the UEL Final would see them into the Champions League regardless of their league position but they can’t count on that and are likely to end up fighting it out with Real Sociedad and Betis for one of Spain’s Europa League rather than Conference League places.

Celta Vigo may sense this as an opportunity to get one over on a side that may just be nursing a few hangovers after their fine achievement in North London on Thursday night. Emery is likely to rest players too with a full matchday in LaLiga in midweek and Celta ought to fancy their chances of recording a third straight win.

They just appear to be building a bit of momentum again under Chacho Coudet with home wins over Osasuna and Levante in their last two outings. A top half finish will probably be their objective now but the European places do look like they may prove out of reach with a 8 point deficit to make up on their opponents in this game.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Villarreal Wins, 3 Celta Wins.
  • Villarreal won 4-0 in Vigo back in January.
  • However Celta have won on their last 2 visits to the Ceramica.
  • Celta scored 3 times in both of those games.

Team News

Samu Chukwueze was stretchered off in midweek and joins Vicente Iborra and Juan Foyth on the injury list for Villarreal.

Renato Tapia and Jeison Murillo are out for the visitors while talisman Iago Aspas is a doubt but is expected to start.

Predicted Villarreal Starting Lineup:

Asenjo – Estupinan, Funes Mori, Torres, Pena – Parejo, Capoue, Trigueros – Gomez, Alcacer, Gerard (4-3-3)

Predicted Celta Vigo Starting Lineup:

Villar – Martin, Fontan, Araujo, Mallo – Beltran – Nolito, Suarez, Mendez – Aspas, Mina (4-1-3-2)

Villarreal vs Celta Vigo Prediction: Celta to win 2-1

Celta do have some selection issues of their own, but overall they look well equipped to take advantage of a bit of fatigue and most likely some rotation from Villarreal. Unai Emery’s side have lost 3 of their last 5 in LaLiga with the Europa League increasingly starting to take precedence and there’s certainly a danger they could slip to another loss here in a fixture which in recent times has favoured the visitors.
