Tenerife vs Almeria Preview

This matchday should bring some answers to the lingering questions in LaLiga SmartBank, particularly at the very top of the table. Defeat for Almeria here would all but end their chances of automatic promotion and privately at least they may already be starting to accept that it’s probably going to be the play-offs again with Espanyol and Mallorca seemingly destined to finish in the top two.
Their opponents in this game are mid-table Tenerife. They currently sit 11 points off the play-offs but 7 points above the relegation zone. They’d like another victory to just guarantee they won’t have any late season relegation fears but overall they shouldn’t really have anything to worry about.
Their recent matches have been short on drama and not great watches in truth. None of Tenerife’s last 8 league outings have seen either them or their opponents score more than once. Five of those games finished level but they come into this after a 1-0 loss to Girona. Despite their mid-table standing, they have had a really good season on their own ground though with only 3 teams having left the Canary Island with maximum points.
After a period of relative stability under Jose Gomes, Almeria’s wealthy owner Turki Al-Sheikh has made another coaching change with Rubi coming in to oversee the remainder of their campaign. On the surface it’s a decent appointment given he had pretty much established himself as a top flight coach having guided Espanyol to European qualification the season before last.
It was far from the dream start for Rubi though. Almeria were held to a 2-2 home draw by bottom half Real Oviedo, a further dent to their automatic promotion prospects. That was a 5th game without a win for Almeria and their focus over the remaining five games of the regular season will be firstly to make sure they don’t slide down into a position where their place in the play-offs come into doubt. That shouldn’t be an issue but they could certainly do with some morale boosting victories heading into those decisive post season games.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Tenerife Wins, 3 Almeria Wins, 2 Draws.
- Almeria have won 3 of the last 4 meetings including a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture earlier this term.
- Almeria have won 3-1 on each of their last two visits to Tenerife.
Tenerife vs Almeria Predictions
Score Prediction: Tenerife 1-1 Almeria
Both sides are currently in the habit of drawing football matches and it wouldn’t be a great surprise if that trend was to continue here. Almeria are clearly a bit out of sorts and Rubi failed to make an immediate impact in his first game. They may have to settle for a draw here up against a Tenerife side which rarely loses at home.
