Sevilla vs Athletic Club Preview

The Monday night game this week in LaLiga comes from the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. It sees surprise title contenders Sevilla entertain Athletic Club as Julen Lopetegui’s side seek to extend their impressive winning streak.

It has been such an unpredictable season in the Spanish top flight that you can rule nothing out from here and as the form team in a four-horse title race, Sevilla are very much in the shake-up. They can make it 6 wins on the spin here which would set them up very nicely for a crucial game away against Real Madrid next weekend.

Whatever happens from here, Julen Lopetegui’s side have done brilliantly to just get themselves into contention with the so-called “big three” boasting vastly superior budgets and having dominated for so long. There can be no doubt Sevilla are there on merit though with the 3rd best defensive record in the league and enough quality at the other end of the pitch to consistently edge out tight games. They come into this one following a 2-1 win over Granada in a game that was controversially restarted after the referee had blown the Full-Time whistle.

Athletic Club could give them a real test though. While their league form hasn’t been fantastic, with only one win in their last eight in LaLiga, they have been very tough to beat. Indeed it’s just one defeat since January for the Basque side in the league with a large portion of their recent games ending up all square.

They don’t really have an awful amount left to play for although a surprise win here would keep their slim European hopes alive for another week. Realistically though, they probably have too much ground to make up with a 2-2 home draw against Real Valladolid last week, the latest setback for Marcelinoa’s side, coming on the back of a surprise win over leaders Atleti at San Mames. Athletic twice took the lead in the Valladolid game through Jon Morcillo and Raul Garcia but failed to see it out.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Sevilla Wins, 3 Athletic Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Athletic won the reverse fixture 2-1 earlier this term.
  • They’ve only taken 1 point from their last 3 league visits to the RSP.
  • However they were 1-0 winners in the Copa del Rey on this ground in 2019 but still lost the tie overall.

Team News

Tomas Vaclik is rated doubtful for this game but wouldn’t have featured anyway with Sevilla otherwise boasting a clean bill of health.

Ander Capa, Yuri Berchiche and Iker Muniain are all out injured for Athletic.

Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:

Bono – Acuna, Carlos, Kounde, Navas – Jordan, Ferando – Ocampos, Gomez, Suso – En-Nesyri (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Athletic Club Starting Lineup:

Simon – Balenziaga, Martinez, Yeray, De Marcos – Morcillo, Vesga, Garcia, Berenguer – Villalibre, Williams (4-4-2)

Sevilla vs Athletic Club Prediction – 2-1 Sevilla

This is likely to be a competitive game and Athletic shouldn’t be ruled out but they are probably sick to death of this city by now having visited so many times in 2021. Those recent cup Final defeats will largely come to define their season and you just sense they may end up on the losing side in Seville again here with Julen Lopetegui’s side in terrific form and showing no sign of letting up in their bid for a surprise league title.
