Real Valladolid vs Real Betis Preview

Real Valladolid stadium

Real Valladolid and Real Betis clash in the first game this Sunday in LaLiga Santander. Both sides have plenty left to play for with the hosts battling for their lives while Betis continue to push for European qualification.

The stakes couldn’t be much higher now for Real Valladolid. They have experience of being involved in and winning a relegation battle during their first season back in the top flight but it’s a different side now and they need to find all of that resolve if they are going to scrape clear of trouble. To their credit, they have shown plenty of spirit of late but there are some clear limitations to this side and they are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference heading into the weekend.

They twice came from behind to take a 2-2 draw from their trip to San Mames in midweek. That was a 3rd straight draw for Sergio’s side but it’s 7 without a win for them heading into this match, with no victories since they saw off Getafe at the Jose Zorrilla. That was one of just three home victories Real Valladolid have recorded this season in LaLiga and they’ve only got top seven opposition left to host which suggests they may struggle to improve on that.

This is perhaps their best chance to do so against a Real Betis side that looks on course for European qualification but still has a bit of work to do to secure it. They’ve also been drawing rather than winning matches of late with their last five outings in LaLiga all ending level including a good point in a goalless game away to Real Madrid last weekend.

It’s really quite impressive how much they’ve improved defensively this season with Manuel Pellegrini having inherited what was LaLiga’s 2nd worst defence last term. This time around, Betis have managed to keep a clean sheet in an impressive 38% of their away games in LaLiga. They’ve also picked up five wins away to bottom half teams which bodes well for their chances here as they look to complete a league double over Real Valladolid.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Real Valladolid Wins, 3 Betis Wins.
  • There have been just 6 goals in the last 6 meetings between the sides at the Jose Zorrilla.
  • There have been 2 wins for each team during that period and two 0-0 draws.
  • Betis won the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this season.

Team News

Real Valladolid aren’t likely to change too much from their trip to Bilbao and have Kiko Olivas available again after a long injury absence.

Nabil Fekir returns from a ban for Real Betis who should be close to full strength here.

Predicted Real Valladolid Starting Lineup:

Roberto – Olaza, Bruno, Joaquin, Janko – Orellana, Alcaraz, Mesa, Plano – Andre, Weissman (4-4-2)

Predicted Real Betis Starting Lineup:

Bravo – Miranda, Ruiz, Mandi, Emerson – Guardado, Rodriguez – Canales, Fekir, Lainez – Iglesias (4-2-3-1)

Real Valladolid vs Real Betis Prediction – 1-1 Draw

With Real Valladolid having drawn 5 of their last 7 and Betis all of their last 5, the draw is the obvious pick here. There’s probably slightly more onus on Real Valladolid to chase the win but they’ve struggled to kill games off and a point each looks a more likely outcome and it wouldn’t be a disastrous outcome for either coach.
