The relegation six pointers are coming thick and fast in LaLiga and there aren’t many bigger than this one. The fact it is also a Basque derby is secondary to the perilous situation both clubs find themselves in. It’s essentially a “must win” game for Eibar who are in deep trouble at the bottom of the table, and find themselves 7 points from safety with just 5 games to go.

Defeat would be a terminal blow you’d have to say, particularly given it’s against one of their direct rivals. Sadly though it wouldn’t be a great surprise with Eibar showing little sign that they are going to mount a great escape act. They’ve lost 5 in a row in LaLiga at a time when sides around them have been picking up a few results and while they’ve had some tough fixtures – Mendilibar’s side have started to look like a team almost resigned to their fate.

Their last two performances haven’t been terrible. They had 14 shots to Real Sociedad’s 5 on Monday night and also double the number of attempts of Granada in their previous game. However 4-1 and 1-0 defeats paint a different picture and their inability to put the ball in the net looks like it will ultimately cost them their top flight status.

Alaves were level on points with Eibar only four matchdays ago. However they’ve taken 8 points from their last 4 games to dramatically improve their chances of staying in the top flight. Javier Calleja has done a tremendous job in restoring some belief in this team which was also starting to look like one doomed to the drop during the latter days of Abelardo’s ill-fated second reign.

It could have been even better had Alaves managed to see out the game at Mestalla last time out. They took the lead in the 84th minute through John Guidetti but were frustrated by an 89th minute leveller from Jose Gaya. Alaves are only a point outside of the bottom three as a result so they still have plenty more work to do if they are going to be in the top flight again next term.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Eibar Win, 4 Alaves Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Alaves have won all of the last 3 meetings.
  • They won 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this term.
  • Alaves have also won on 2 of their last 3 trips to Ipurua, but did lose 2-1 here in 2018.

Team News

Recio is banned for Eibar while Pedro Bigas is still out injured.

Javier Lopez is suspended for Alaves after his red card last time out. Rodrigo Ely,  Iñigo Córdoba and Ruben Duarte also miss out to injuries.

Predicted Eibar Starting Lineup:

Dmitrovic – Cote, Arbilla, Oliveira, Correa – Gil, Exposito, Diop, Leon – Muto, Kike (4-4-2)

Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:

Pacheco – Martin, Lejeune, Laguardia, Navarro – Pons, Battaglia, Pina, Jota – Joselu, Perez (4-4-2)

Eibar vs Alaves Prediction – Alaves to Win 1-0

Alaves are the team that is in form and seems to be playing with the kind of belief which suggests they will ultimately survive. Eibar haven’t completely given up but they continue to look devoid of any real goal threat and the visitors may nick a narrow victory here to push themselves further towards safety.
