There’s a Basque derby this Monday in LaLiga and sadly it may be a long time before we get to see two sides from Gipuzkoa clash again in the Spanish top flight after this match. Eibar have defied all expectations in terms of how long they have stayed in LaLiga but they are in deep trouble this season and will remain bottom whatever the result here.

Results over the weekend mean they are now 7 points off safety and even against strong opposition, this is a match they really need to win. They face fellow strugglers Alaves and Getafe after this, so there are still opportunities for Eibar to fight their way back into a position from which they can survive but it’s going to be a big ask for José Luis Mendilibar’s side.

There have been too many games like their last fixture against Granada where they’ve been very much in the game but have struggled to convert chances and have been found wanting at the other end. They had twice as many attempts and double the possession count as the Andalusian side but still lost 4-1. It’s just 1 point from 7 league games now for Eibar but that did come in a Basque derby away to Athletic.

Real Sociedad hadn’t been in great form either, going five without a win in LaLiga until they saw off Celta Vigo last time out. Goals from Portu and Adnan Januzaj sealed victory at the Reale Arena but it wasn’t a vintage display from Imanol’s side. Fortunately for them though, recent results have largely gone in their favour elsewhere and they remain in 5th place heading into this match, in a strong position to seal Europa League qualification.

Their away record this season has largely mirrored their home one. They average 1.53 points per game on their travels, only marginally less than their return at home and it’s the best average outside of the top four. La Real are only 14th in the form table for the last 8 games though and they aren’t performing anywhere near the level that saw them excel in the early stages of this season. However a number of midfield injuries have been a major factor in that you sense and they are still short on options in that department heading into this game.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Real Sociedad Wins, 1 Eibar Win, 3 Draws.
  • All of the last five meetings have seen both teams score.
  • Eibar have won 4 of the last 6 meetings at Ipurua.
  • However Real Sociedad did win 2-1 here – in the first game played behind closed doors last season.

Team News

The likes of Pedro Bigas and Edu Exposito have been carrying knocks and will be monitored ahead of this one.

Carlos Fernandez and Aritz Elustondo are both suspended for the visitors. Mikel Merino is a significant injury absentee while David Silva is a doubt.

Predicted Eibar Starting Lineup:

Dmitrovic – Cote, Arbilla, Oliveira, Pozo – Diop, A. Garcia, Recio – Gil, Kike, Rodrigues (4-3-3)

Predicted Real Sociedad Starting Lineup:

Remiro – Monreal, Le Normand, Zubeldia, Gorosabel – Zubimendi, Guevara, Guridi – Oyarzabal, Isak, Portu (4-3-3)

Eibar vs Real Sociedad Prediction – Real Sociedad to win 3-1

Eibar are starting to look like a team destined for the drop and you just don’t see enough quality in the final third to suggest they are going to find a way to drag themselves out of it. They’ve been leaking goals too of late and Real Sociedad are capable of adding to their misery here.
