Valencia vs Alaves Preview

Valencia’s disappointing season is drawing towards a close and they could do with victory here to all but guarantee there will be no chance of them slipping down into the Segunda Division. They are 8 points above the relegation zone currently, which is a big margin at this point in the campaign but they’d only be 2 points above opponents Alaves were they to lose this and the Basque side most certainly are still involved.

Recent results have been poor for Javi Gracia and his team. They’ve taken just 2 points from their last 4 league matches and were well beaten by Osasuna in midweek. Despite Kevin Gameiro’s 1st Half goal, Los Che slumped to a 3-1 loss with their away day blues continuing.

Fortunately for Valencia, they have at least found results much easier to come by at Mestalla. They remain unbeaten on their own ground in 2021, winning 4 of their last 5 there. They are one of the few teams which may even have benefited slightly from not having fans present, as it’s unlikely the Mestalla faithful would have been too impressed with what they’ve seen this season, and while much of the anger would have been directed at the board, that could still have made it a difficult environment for the Valencia players to play in.

It has been an equally turbulent season at Alaves who are onto their third coach as they bid to stay in the league. It is starting to look like a case of third time lucky though with Javi Calleja steering his team to back-to-back home wins over Huesca and Villarreal in the past week to provide a massive boost in Alaves’ bid for survival.

It was starting to look pretty bleak for them prior to that but it just shows how quickly things can turn around for sides at the bottom. Goals from Joselu and Edgar Mendez saw off the Yellow Submarine and while they are by no means the most creative side in this league, having three decent options in terms of strikers gives them a real edge on most teams in the bottom six and could prove decisive in the final reckoning.

Valencia vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 1-1 Alaves

Valencia continue to disappoint and while their home form has been decent since the turn of the year, you sense they’ll be content just to get this season over with. A draw here would be another point in the direction of safety and it may be all they get against a resurgent Alaves side that is suddenly playing with a bit of belief again.
