Elche vs Levante Preview

Elche stadium

Elche are back in action on Saturday and it’s another very important game in their battle for survival. There will be just five games to go after this one and they might not get many better chances to record a victory than this game against an out of sorts Levante side that has little left to play for.

That’s certainly not the case for Elche. They are 19th heading into the weekend but victory here would move them level with Alaves in 16th. Fran Escriba has done a pretty good job of making them competitive since he took over, and they are still unbeaten at the Manuel Martinez Valero under his leadership with a return of 8 points from their last 4 home games vital in giving Elche a realistic shot at beating the drop heading into the final few weeks.

It could have been more had they hung on to a 1-0 lead in their relegation six pointer against Real Valladolid in midweek. Fidel Chaves had put Elche ahead early on and they were set to climb out of the drop-zone until Lucas Olaza struck in the 86th minute for the visitors. Such moments can prove so decisive in relegation battles and Elche will be desperately hoping that isn’t the case.

While Levante are dangerous opponents for anyone on their day, Elche couldn’t have picked a much better fixture here. Paco Lopez’s side are sitting in 11th with no chances of making Europe but there’s no danger of them going down. They’ve had a poor week, losing 5-1 at home to Villarreal before a slightly better showing in a 1-0 loss to Sevilla.

They did win their most recent away game at Eibar but 4 defeats from their last 5 suggests this is a side that is starting to just switch off a bit and is struggling to recreate the same intensity at the end of a hectic season. Paco Lopez may see these games as a chance to experiment a little and perhaps give some game-time to fringe players, particularly at the end of a week which has seen them play three times.

Elche vs Levante Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 1-0 Levante

We’re getting to the point in the season where struggling teams frequently start beating those with nothing to play for. Elche have done well at home since the change in coach and they may just have the beating of a Levante side which has underdelivered in recent matches despite some significant absentees in the home dressing room.
