Celta Vigo and Osasuna clash in one of the few games this weekend in LaLiga with nothing really riding on it. They are both sat comfortably in mid-table and won’t be going down but it seems highly unlikely either has a chance of making Europe despite what has been a really strong run of form from the visitors of late.

On paper, Celta are the side with the kind of quality which suggests they are capable of mounting a European challenge next season or beyond. However for now, Celta fans will probably settle for clear progress this year under the guidance of Chacho Coudet who has managed to get more out of a few players other than Iago Aspas, who has largely carried this club for so long.

Celta don’t come into this match in the best of form though. They’ve only won one of their last six in LaLiga – a 3-1 win away to struggling Alaves. While they’ve been a good watch still, they’ve come out on the wrong end of 2-1 and 4-3 scorelines in recent games against Real Sociedad and Sevilla and there are still defensive flaws which can be exploited.

Osasuna meanwhile are suddenly one of the form teams in LaLiga, having gone 6 without losing, winning their last 3. They’ve conceded just 2 goals during that period and Jagoba Arrasate is perhaps emerging as an unlikely contender for coach of the year with not many standout candidates.

The Pamplona based side are now 9th in LaLiga having hit the magic 40 point figure in midweek. They are a team with few stars but centre-backs David Garcia and Aridane Hernandez perhaps deserve special praise for having formed an excellent partnership which has been key in Osasuna’s ability to stay in games and keep opposition forwards quiet.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Osasuna Wins, 2 Celta Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Osasuna are without a win on their last 4 visits to Vigo.
  • Their last victory at Balaidos came via a 2-0 margin in September 2006.
  • Osasuna won the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this term.

Team News

Emre Mor and Ruben Blanco continue to be sidelined for Celta who have no fresh issues heading into the weekend.

We may see some light rotation from Osasuna with Ruben Garcia and Kike Barja perhaps getting starts out wide.

Predicted Celta Starting Lineup:

Villar – Martin, Murillo, Araujo, Mallo – Tapia – Nolito, Suarez, Mendez – Mina, Aspas (4-1-3-2)

Predicted Osasuna Starting Lineup:

Herrera – Sanchez, Garcia, Hernandez, Vidal – Garcia, Moncayola, Brasanac, Barja – Avila, Budimir (4-4-2)

Celta Vigo vs Osasuna Prediction – 1-1 Draw

This is a tough game to call as the momentum is with the visitors heading into it. Celta haven’t lost at home to anyone outside the top six this season though and it feels like a draw is perhaps the most likely outcome.
