Atletico Madrid vs Eibar Preview

Atletico Madrid are still top of LaLiga heading into this weekend but there is simply no more margin for error and they have to string together a winning streak to ensure they are still masters of their own destiny heading into their crucial trip to Camp Nou next month. In theory, Eibar shouldn’t pose the sternest of tests but the visitors are also desperate for the points as they battle relegation.

With injury problems mounting, Atleti ended up having to settle for a point at Betis last weekend, despite taking the lead early on. Real Madrid’s victory in the Clasico probably did them a favour and at least ensured they held on to top spot but the overall impression at this point is that the title is starting to slide away from Atleti, which is a strange thing to say given they are still top.

Over the last 8 matches alone, they’ve picked up 8 fewer points than Barcelona and 7 less than Real Madrid. They’ve only managed to score twice in their last four matches, a run which has seen them play struggling Getafe and Alaves, as well as the two Seville clubs. With Luis Suarez and Joao Felix absent, they are a bit short on options in terms of goal threat here too, but Diego Simeone will believe that one win, no matter how it comes, would be something to build from and offer the chance to get some momentum going again.

This match in theory offers them a chance to do that. Eibar are in woeful form with just 1 point from their last 6 games and they’ve slid to the very foot of the table, making this a “top vs bottom” clash. Recent 1-0 defeats to the likes of Elche, Cadiz and Levante have been particularly damaging and it’s starting to look like this may very well be the end of the road for Eibar in the top flight.

They are clearly short on quality in the final third, not helped by the likely injury absence of Bryan Gil here. Their only regular source of goals has been Kike Garcia, who has 8 for the season in LaLiga, 5 more than any of his teammates have managed.

Atletico Madrid vs Eibar Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Eibar

Atleti are clearly a bit low on confidence and aren’t playing well but even without their two main strikers, they should still find a way to break down this Eibar defence. Diego Simeone’s side ought to be able to put three points on the board here, but tougher tests will come.
