This is perhaps the biggest game of the weekend in LaLiga in terms of what’s at stake. Alaves and Huesca are both battling against relegation and victory here for either would be an enormous boost to their chances of beating the drop. Huesca in 16th, come into the game 3 points and 3 places better off than their opponents.

It feels pretty close to a “must win” game for Alaves. They’ve endured a pretty miserable season, particularly since the turn of the year. The decision to replace Pablo Machin with Abelardo turned out to be a mistake with the latter’s second spell in Vitoria seeing the team plummet towards deep relegation trouble.

Javier Calleja was the slightly surprising choice to lead Alaves’ survival push. The former Villarreal boss got off to a decent start with a goalless draw away to Basque rivals Athletic Club, although Marcelino’s side did rotate heavily in that game. Their return of 2 points from 8 games is still the worst in the league though and the result here, may well shape how the remainder of their season pans out.

Huesca certainly take more momentum into the game. Back to back wins over Levante and Elche have served up a huge boost to their chances of beating the drop and have finally pulled them out of the bottom three where they had spent almost the entire campaign. For much of the season, Huesca have largely impressed with their football but results have continued to elude them and Pacheta will be hoping the tide has now turned in that regard.

Victory over Elche last time out would have been particularly sweet given he left the Valencian club last summer having guided them from the Segunda B to LaLiga only to be replaced. He has got this team performing well with Rafa Mir playing a starring role up front. It has been a major breakthrough campaign for the 23 year old who is onto 12 goals for the season, an invaluable contribution in a struggling team.

Alaves vs Huesca Predictions

Score Prediction: Alaves 1-2 Huesca

Huesca are the side with all the momentum heading into this and they will really fancy this you sense. Alaves’ problems run deeper than the coach and it’s going to be tough for Calleja to make an immediate impact. He’s not helped by a couple of suspensions here and Huesca may just have enough to make it three priceless wins on the spin.
