Sporting Gijon vs Real Oviedo Preview
It’s derby day in Asturias this Saturday. This is one of Spain’s biggest derby matches and one of the fiercest rivalries that exists between two teams that don’t share the same city. It’s only 30 km between Gijon and Oviedo and it’s possible this may be the final derby for some time with Sporting pushing for promotion and Real Oviedo in mild danger of getting sucked into the relegation scrap.
Sporting will start as favourites but perhaps not massive ones. Their form hasn’t been great of late and they come into this game on the back of successive defeats which have effectively ended their hopes of clinching automatic promotion this year. The 2-1 loss to Mirandes last time out at El Molinon would have been particularly tough to take as it ended what was a 16-game unbeaten home record in LaLiga SmartBank this season.
A 1-0 defeat at Tenerife last time out added to the sense that this is a team that is still a bit short on the kind of attacking quality needed to win promotion. Their goal tally of 35 in 34 games is not what you expect from a team in the top six and it’s extraordinarily poor when you consider they actually have the top scorer in the Segunda Division in the shape of Uroš Đurđević who has scored 60% of his team’s goals this term.
It’s safe to say Real Oviedo will be keeping a close eye on the Serb as they bid to dent their local rivals’ promotion bid. It’s now 7 without a win for José Ángel Ziganda’s side but with 5 draws in that period, they’ve managed to keep a bit of an advantage on the teams in the bottom four.
They are 5 points clear of Cartagena in 19th heading into this matchday where securing local pride will certainly be the main focus. While Sporting have been the stronger team for most of the 21st Century, Real Oviedo’s record in these derbies is actually very good and they are hoping to complete the double over Sporting here having won the reverse fixture earlier in the season thanks to Sergio Tejera’s goal.

Sporting Gijon vs Real Oviedo Predictions
Score Prediction: Sporting 0-0 Real Oviedo
The passion of the supporters is normally the highlight of these games and sadly we again won’t even have that this weekend. The action on the pitch regularly disappoints and with both sides short on attacking quality, don’t be surprised if this descends into another drab match with little goalmouth action.
