Castellon vs Mallorca Preview

There’s no LaLiga action this Saturday which offers up a chance to take a look at one team who will most likely be in the top flight again next term. Mallorca are closing in on an immediate return to the Primera and they can take another step in that direction as they take on struggling Castellon.
It’s every bit as big a game for the hosts who are currently one place and one point above the relegation zone heading into matchday 35. Of the teams near the bottom, they are one of the real form teams though with the side from the Valencian Community having won 4 of their last 8 league matches to really give themselves a fighting shot of staying in this league.
Only Espanyol can better their return of 14 points from the last 8 games so this has the potential to be a tricky game for Mallorca. One of the most notable things about Castellon’s season is that they are yet to draw at home with 8 wins and 9 defeats so far at the Nou Estadi Castàlia. Whether they’ve deliberately decided to risk one point to try and win three is debatable, and the trend has continued even since Juan Carlos Garrido was appointed their new coach in January. However it’s certainly a refreshing statistic in a league where many teams are content to play low-risk football and try to accumulate points.
Castellon will sense they have at least a chance here against a Mallorca side that has been wobbling on their travels of late. The Balearic Islanders have only collected one point from their last three away games in a run which included a miserable 4-1 loss at Fuenlabrada.
The bigger picture is looking considerably rosier for Mallorca though. Recent home wins over Leganes and Lugo, coupled with 3rd place Almeria dropping points has put them in a really strong position with only 8 games to go. Heading into this round of fixtures, they are 8 points clear of 3rd and another victory here would leave them starting to think about when and not if they will clinch automatic promotion.
Head to Head
- Mallorca won 3-1 earlier in the season at Son Moix.
- There have been no other recent meetings.
Castellon vs Mallorca Predictions
Score Prediction: Castellon 0-1 Mallorca
It does feel like there is a bigger gulf in class than normal this season between the teams at the top and bottom of this league. There were two tiers between these clubs last season and while Castellon have been in good form, it’s likely they will sink to a 10th home defeat of the campaign here.
