Celta Vigo and Sevilla clash in the Monday game this week in LaLiga. In truth, neither side appears to have an awful amount left to play for. Celta are 9 points off the European places and would need to make a really strong end to the season to stand a chance of qualifying for even the Conference League. Sevilla meanwhile look certain to finish in the top four but even if they won every game, it’s unlikely to be enough to give them a shot at the title.

Despite that, this still promises to be a decent game and it’ll be a good test of how much progress Celta are making under Chacho Coudet. Their current form is pretty mixed. Their last six outings have produced two wins, two draws and two defeats and they come into this on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid and a 3-1 win over Alaves.

Their victory in Vitoria last time out came via three quick-fire goals as Nolito, Iago Aspas and Santi Mina all struck within the first twenty minutes. The trio have scored 24 goals between them in LaLiga this term, which is more than the entire squads of Eibar and Getafe. While Aspas has still been incredibly important, it is encouraging that other players are starting to step up and deliver more in front of goal.

Perhaps surprisingly of these two clubs, it’s Sevilla who have been most dependent on one player for goals this term. Youssef En-Nesyri has netted 15 times in LaLiga, 11 more than the next best with Luuk de Jong and Lucas Ocampos on 4 apiece. The latter got 14 in LaLiga last season and had he managed to repeat that kind of season this time around, we may have been in a position to be seriously talking about a four-horse title race right now.

Defensively Sevilla have been better than Barcelona and Real Madrid and only marginally worse than Atleti. They’ve conceded just 0.72 goals per game and come into this following a 1-0 home win over Atletico Madrid last weekend with Marcus Acuna the surprise match winner.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Sevilla Wins, 3 Celta Wins, 1 Draw.
  • 5 of the last 6 meetings between the clubs have been won by the team playing at home.
  • Celta have won the last 3 meetings at Balaidos by an aggregate score of 7-1.
  • Sevilla’s last win in Vigo was by a 3-0 margin in 2016.

Team News

Jeison Murillo is suspended for the home team. They also have another likely defensive absentee with Nestor Araujo carrying a knock.

Sergio Escudero has tested positive for COVID-19 but otherwise Sevilla should be at full strength.

Predicted Celta Starting Lineup:

Villar – Martin, Fontan, Aidoo, Mallo – Tapia – Nolito, Suarez, Mendez – Aspas, Mina (4-1-3-2)

Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:

Bono – Acuna, Carlos, Kounde, Navas – Rakitic, Fernando, Jordan – Ocampos, En-Nesyri, Suso (4-3-3)

LaLiga Expert Predicts: Celta 1-2 Sevilla (follow us on Tipstrr to view our betting tips)

Sevilla have won half of their away league games this season and as long as they can maintain their motivation, there’s no reason why they can’t end the season well. They no longer have any cup distractions and have had 7 full days off to prepare for this one so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t see a strong performance here and they may be just too strong for Celta on the night.
