The late game on Sunday in LaLiga comes from the Benito Villamarin and it’s a really significant night for Atletico Madrid. Whatever the result in Saturday’s Clasico, Atleti are now under real pressure to stop dropping points with their advantage on Barcelona and Real Madrid having been dramatically cut in recent weeks.

Betis are capable of giving them a real test. Manuel Pellegrini’s side are battling hard for a place in Europe next season and they look well capable of getting it. They have been one of the form teams in LaLiga since the turn of the year and only Real Madrid and Barcelona can better their tally of 16 points from their last 8 games.

They’ve won 5 of their last 7 but could only take a point from their trip to Elche last weekend despite taking the lead early on thanks to a Borja Iglesias penalty. They’ve won on their last three outings at the Benito Villamarin and it’s clearly now a team that is functioning well and playing the way that Pellegrini wants with far more consistency from Betis than we saw earlier in the season.

Atleti fans will certainly be feeling nervous about this game. They’ve not won back-to-back matches since January and with Barcelona dropping hardly any points of late, it feels as though they are going to need to win almost all of their remaining games if they are going to hold on to clinch this title. That looks unlikely right now but a victory in a tough game like this in difficult circumstances could spark something of a momentum shift.

Those difficult circumstances are largely because they are missing both Luis Suarez and Marcos Llorente here – arguably their best two players this season. They are Atleti’s top two scorers while Llorente also tops their assist rankings with 8. Diego Simeone will be hoping Joao Felix can provide some inspiration as Atleti look to avoid the fate of last weekend when they suffered defeat in this city against Sevilla.

  • However Atleti have won on 4 of their last 6 visits to the green and white half of Seville overall.

This could be every bit as tough as Atletico Madrid’s trip to the other half of Seville last weekend. Betis are in form and playing with real belief at the Benito Villamarin. With Suarez and Llorente absent, it’s hard to see where the away team’s goal threat is going to come from and they could find themselves on the wrong end of another damaging loss.
