Real Madrid and Liverpool renew their rivalry on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals, three years on from the 2018 Final between the clubs. Los Blancos won on that occasion but it’s the English side who will be the slight favourites to progress this time around.

That Final will be remembered for a number of reasons from Loris Karius’ costly errors to Gareth Bale’s wonder goal and Sergio Ramos’ challenge on Mohamed Salah. The latter is still a sore point for Reds fans but there will be no reunion here with the Real Madrid captain having been ruled out due to a calf injury.

That’s a significant blow to Real Madrid’s chances in this tie with Ramos so often a key contributor at both ends of the pitch on these big European nights. While they’ve often underwhelmed this season, Los Blancos do head into April still in both the Champions League and LaLiga title race. If they can find the kind of end of season form which propelled them to the domestic title last term, this could yet be another memorable season for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

They come into this match on the back of four straight wins in all competitions. That includes the 2nd Leg of what was ultimately a pretty comfortable 4-1 aggregate win against Atalanta in the last round and they will take confidence from having delivered in the big games throughout this season. All of their defeats have come in somewhat surprising fashion but their ability to deliver against the best will be tested to the max here by the English champions.

While this is a Liverpool side that is enduring a very difficult season, it’s still one blessed with plenty of quality and they showed evidence of that at the weekend with an impressive 3-0 win at Arsenal in the Premier League. Perhaps the international break came at a good time for Jurgen Klopp’s side and with their league defence over, they will be really targeting this competition.

Real Madrid will see genuine weakness in the visiting central defence though while the Liverpool midfield hasn’t functioned as well this season as it did last. It’ll be interesting to see what Zinedine Zidane does in terms of tactics but either way it’s certain that in-form Karim Benzema will be the focal point of the Madrid attack and the Frenchman will need to have a good tie if the Spanish side are going to have a chance of progressing.

Head to Head

  • Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 3 Real Madrid Wins, 2 Liverpool Wins.
  • Real Madrid have won the last 3 meetings including the 2018 Final in Kixev.
  • They also won both meetings to nil in the 2014/15 UCL group stage.
  • However Liverpool were 5-0 aggregate winners when the clubs met in the last 16 in 2008/09.

Team News

Sergio Ramos, Eden Hazard and Dani Carvajal are all significant injury absentees for Real Madrid and all three would have started if fit. Fede Valverde is in the squad and may well start. Raphael Varane has tested positive for COVID-19 and is also absent.

Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are Liverpool’s main injury absentees. Diogo Jota is competing with Roberto Firmino for a start up front.

Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:

Courtois – Mendy, Nacho, Militao, Vazquez – Valverde, Casemiro, Kroos – Modric – Benzema, Vinicius (4-3-1-2)

Predicted Liverpool Starting Lineup:

Alisson – Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Kabak, Robertson – Thiago, Fabinho, Wijnaldum – Salah, Firmino, Mane (4-3-3)

Real Madrid vs Liverpool Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-1 Liverpool

Of the four Champions League Quarter-Finals, this is surely the most difficult to call. Liverpool were much like their former selves at the weekend, and at their best they should be too strong for this Real Madrid side. However you can never write Zinedine Zidane’s side off in this competition and their strong performances in the big games this term suggests they are capable of getting a result on Wednesday to keep themselves in the tie heading to Anfield, where Liverpool have struggled badly of late.
