Elche vs Real Betis Preview
Elche’s survival bid continues on Saturday as they welcome Real Betis to the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero. They are hoping to complete a home double over the Seville clubs having beaten Sevilla on this ground a few weeks back.
That was Elche’s most recent victory but it’s just 1 point from 3 games since then, although they were all away fixtures against Real Madrid, Sevilla and Getafe. It has been a really tough start for Fran Escriba in terms of the number of top sides he’s had to face and overall you suspect he’ll be pretty happy to have taken 7 points from his 7 games to date and keep Elche in a position where they still have a realistic shot on securing survival heading into the final 10 matches.
For a side which on paper looks the weakest in the division, that’s an achievement in itself and we’ve seen enough strange things happen in the final few weeks to know anything is possible from here. 6 of their final 10 matches are at home, and having won both home games since Escriba returned, they will believe survival is something they can achieve.
Real Betis are the latest in a line of tough opponents though with the Andalusian club one of the form teams in LaLiga since the turn of the year. Their return of 18 points from their last 8 games is only bettered by Real Madrid and Barcelona and Manuel Pellegrini’s side are now in a position where they probably should go on and clinch European qualification, although they face stiff competition from the likes of Villarreal and Real Sociedad.
It’s 5 wins from 6 coming into this for Betis with the solitary defeat coming in the Seville derby. They brushed that off well though to beat Levante 2-0 at home last time out with goals from Nabil Fekir and Juanmi. Their ability to get a bit more out of those forward players and also Borja Iglesias has been key in their resurgence so far this year. When the likes of Fekir and Iglesias are on song, they suddenly start to look like a genuinely good side with Sergio Canales continuing to pull the strings so impressively from midfield.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Elche Wins, 2 Betis Wins, 1 Draw.

Top scorer Lucas Boye is suspended, a significant blow to Elche’s hopes of getting something from this match.
No major changes are expected from Betis with Claudio Bravo likely to continue in goal.

Elche have been better since the change in coach but this is a confident Betis side that is playing well and suddenly offering a much greater threat in the final third of the pitch. Overall that extra quality should be decisive over 90 minutes here.
