Valencia make the long trip to Cadiz on Sunday in LaLiga. They are hoping to head a recent run of results which has seen home victories followed by away defeats and they will feel as though they have a chance of doing that against a struggling Cadiz side which needs the points to bolster their survival hopes.

Cadiz are 15th in LaLiga and have only won 1 of their last 11 in all competitions. While they have drifted towards danger, overall they are still pretty well placed in terms of their overall objective for the season – which was purely to stay in the league. They have a six point advantage on the drop-zone heading into this matchday and will feel as though they may only need a couple of wins from their final ten games to get themselves to safety.

A return of just 5 points from their last 8 in LaLiga suggests that is no forgone conclusion though. Only Eibar have picked up fewer points over that period and it was a home win over the Basque minnows that gave Cadiz their only league win since early January. They’ll be hoping top scorer Alvaro Negredo can find some form to help sink his former club here.

As for Valencia, their run of four straight home league wins has eased any relegation fears but their away results have prevented followers of Los Che from having too much to get excited about. They’ve lost their last 3 road games to nil including the derby at Levante in their most recent away fixture.

A safe mid-table finish now looks more or less guaranteed for Valencia although a number of their remaining big name players may start to question their future with little sign of ambition from the current board. The plan to integrate lots of youth players and build for the future also hasn’t really taken off as much as might have been expected with their current starting XI featuring mostly players in their mid to late twenties or older who had already established themselves prior to this season.

Head to Head

  • Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 3 Valencia Wins, 2 Draws.
  • The sides drew 1-1 in January 2021 in the reverse fixture.
  • That was the first meeting in a decade since a Copa del Rey tie in 2011.
  • Valencia won both meetings in the 2005/06 season – the last time Cadiz were in the top flight.

Team News

Valencia loanee Ruben Sobrino is ineligible to face his parent club while Anthony Lozano is nearing fitness but unlikely to feature here.

Jasper Cillessen is injured again so Jaume Domenech should get the nod in goal. Eliaquim Mangala is an injury doubt.

Predicted Cadiz Starting Lineup:

Ledesma – Espino, Cala, Fali, Iza – Mari, Jonsson – Perea, Fernandez, Sanchez – Negredo (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Valencia Starting Lineup:

Domenech – Gaya, Diakhaby, Paulista, Correia – Blanco, Racic, Soler, Wass – Guedes, Gomez (4-4-2)

It’s a tough game to call with Valencia not really showing much signs of life on their travels while Cadiz have found home wins hard to comeby throughout the campaign. Overall a draw looks the most likely outcome and it’s a result that neither coach would be too devastated by.
