It’s derby day in the Canary Islands this weekend in LaLiga SmartBank. Like so many of these derbies, the absence of supporters does take a real shine off the occasion but Tenerife and Las Palmas fans will still be watching on with keen interest as the two biggest clubs in the Canaries clash.

This has become a pretty regular fixture on the Segunda Division calendar in recent years and with the clubs in 11th and 12th place heading into this matchday, it seems highly likely that Tenerife and Las Palmas will both be in this league again next term. While a play-off push isn’t totally out of the question for either side, it doesn’t look like either club has a huge amount left to play for.

A lack of motivation certainly won’t be a factor here as Tenerife look to extend a strong run of results in home derbies. Las Palmas haven’t won a league game at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in 20 years since a 3-1 victory in their only previous top flight visit. They won’t fancy their chances too much here with Tenerife currently in the better form.

The hosts have taken 14 points from their last 8 league games, a record bettered by only three teams in the Segunda Division. They’ve also reeled off three straight home wins heading into this with Ponferradina, Alcorcon and Albacete all defeated on home soil.

Las Palmas meanwhile have seen their play-off hopes fade with a run of 5 defeats from their last 8 games. The most recent came via a 2-1 margin at home to Girona last time out and Pepe Mel could really do with a positive result in the derby with some questions now being asked as to whether any real progress has been made during his two years at the club.

The former Betis boss has struggled to get results away from home this season with Las Palmas winning just 2 of their 15 away league games, not great at all in a season played entirely behind closed doors. One of those two victories did come in their most recent away fixture though – a 2-1 win at Fuenlabrada.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Tenerife Wins, 1 Las Palmas Win, 2 Draws.
  • Tenerife are unbeaten in 10 home league derbies against Las Palmas, winning 6 of them.
  • Las Palmas ended a 6 game winless streak in league Canary Islands derbies by winning the reverse fixture 1-0 earlier this term.

Tenerife vs Las Palmas Predictions

Score Prediction: Tenerife 2-1 Las Palmas

You can never be totally sure what to expect on derby day but there’s reason to think that Tenerife may just edge this. They’ve been in good home form, winning their last 3 at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López and also tend to get the better of these Canary Island derbies when they are played in Tenerife.
