Almeria vs Leganes Preview

The standout fixture at the top of LaLiga SmartBank this weekend sees 3rd place Almeria host 4th placed Leganes. Both clubs lost their last fixtures to lose ground in the race for automatic promotion which is really heating up now with just 12 games to go for all of the teams involved.
Almeria have painful memories of narrowly missing out on promotion last season and they are out to make amends. This season has certainly been less chaotic than the last which saw a new owner come in, a radical squad overhaul take place and multiple coaches come and go. Turki Al-Sheikh has perhaps learnt that instant success is not guaranteed in this league and has been more patient with current boss José Gomes who has done a decent job of putting together a serious promotion challenge.
They did slip out of the top two last weekend though. A surprise 2-1 defeat at Ponferradina came on the back of a poor 0-0 home draw against struggling Alcorcon. They are only 10th in the Segunda Division form table for the last 8 games and should this dip continue for much longer they risk losing further ground and potentially slipping out of automatic promotion contention in what is a fiercely competitive race.
No side has picked up more points over their last 8 games than Leganes or 5th placed Sporting Gijon who have both collected 16. That has ensured that what was starting to look like a 3-horse race for the top two places, now involves at least five teams. The return of Asier Garitano sparked a great run of form for Lega but their last few outings have been less impressive.
They come into this one after a shock South Madrid derby defeat against Fuenlabrada. With Leganes boasting such a strong record at Butarque this season, it just proved that nothing can ever be guaranteed in this league and Fuenla will feel as though it was largely a deserved win. Garitano has also found a cure for Leganes’ away day blues with impressive wins at Girona and Real Oviedo since he took charge but they will need to be at their best here.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Leganes Wins, 1 Almeria Win, 1 Draw.
- Leganes won the reverse fixture 2-1 only last month.
- They’ve also won on 2 of their last 3 visits to Almeria although their most recent win here was back in 2003.
Almeria vs Leganes Predictions
Score Prediction: Almeria 1-2 Leganes
Overall, Leganes are the side in the better form despite a few blips of late. What will really concern Almeria fans though is their record against the other top sides. They’ve lost all of their five matches against top five opposition this season including the reverse fixture against Leganes. That really doesn’t bode well for them heading into this match, nor for that matter the play-offs, should they ultimately fail to seal automatic promotion again.
