Villarreal vs Cadiz Preview
Europa League quarter-finalists Villarreal return to domestic matters this Sunday as they play host to Cadiz at the Ceramica. This battle of the yellow submarines is a meeting of two teams who have both only won one of their last eight in the Spanish top flight.
In Villarreal’s case, that win came last time out as they came out 3-1 winners at Eibar. It was a much needed victory with their hopes of qualifying for Europe again having taken some real knocks in recent weeks. Any pressure that might have been starting to build on Unai Emery though has been eased by another comfortable European victory.
With Gerard Moreno starring yet again, they eased past Dynamo Kiev 4-0 on aggregate to set up a very winnable Quarter-Final tie against Dinamo Zagreb. Looking ahead further, a potential reunion with former employers Arsenal might await in the Semi-Finals for Emery but there’s plenty of football to be played first. Either way, Villarreal’s season is now increasingly going to be focused around that competition but they do need to keep churning out results in LaLiga too.
The hosts will certainly be the firm favourites here. This is a Cadiz side that has only taken 4 points from their last 9 away games in LaLiga since winning their opening 4 away fixtures this term. Their slide towards danger has eased somewhat in recent weeks though with only one defeat in their last four overall.
Alvaro Cervera has found a way to tighten things up defensively of late. Cadiz conceded 4 goals in 3 consecutive league games earlier in the year but since then, they’ve let in just 3 goals in total in their last 4 matches. That includes an excellent point at Camp Nou as well as much needed victory over fellow strugglers Eibar in their last home game.
