Getafe vs Elche Preview

Getafe match action

The biggest game of the weekend at the bottom end of LaLiga comes from the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Sunday lunchtime. It sees Getafe host Elche as two bottom six clubs face off. Victory for either side would be a huge boost to their survival prospects.

This time last year, as Spain was just starting a long period of lockdown, Getafe were sitting pretty in 5th place, only outside the Champions League places on goal difference. A year is a very long time in football though and of the teams who have been in the Spanish top flight for the duration, only Alaves have picked up fewer points than Getafe since Spanish football returned behind closed doors in June.

Jose Bordalas will point to recent home results as a sign they may have turned a corner. Their last two home outings have seen them draw 0-0 against Atletico Madrid and beat Valencia 3-0. It’s 5 defeats from their last 7 overall in LaLiga though and Getafe really will be in trouble if they end up on the wrong end of the result here.

That looks more possible than it might have done before Fran Escriba returned to Elche. While it is only 6 points from 6 games since his return, that is actually a terrific haul given Elche have faced Barcelona and Real Madrid during that period as well as two games against Sevilla. A 2-0 defeat at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan was their last outing in midweek but Escriba would have had half an eye on this game even then.

Elche’s away record is poor though with just 0.64 points per game on their travels this season. That’s skewed further by a couple of early season away wins and they really have been poor away for a number of months now although they can take heart from a spirited showing in a late defeat at the Alfredo Di Stefano last weekend.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Getafe Wins, 1 Elche Win, 2 Draws.
  • Getafe won 3-1 at Elche in the reverse fixture in January.
  • They’ve taken 10 points from the last 4 league meetings.
  • Elche haven’t beaten Getafe since a 1-0 home win in 2014.

Team News

Allan Nyom, Damián Suárez and Jaime Mata are suspended for the hosts while Cucho Hernandez is injured.

Antonio Barragán and Nino are both doubts for the visitors.

Predicted Getafe Starting Lineup:

Soria – Olivera, Djene, Etxeita, Chakla – Cucurella, Arambarri, Maksimovic, Alena – Unal, Angel (4-4-2)

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Badia – Mojica, Calvo, Verdu, Cifu – Fidel, Marcone, Guti, Morente – Carrillo, Boye (4-4-2)

Elche have improved but back-to-back home clean sheets will have given Getafe confidence and showed at least some indication that the old Geta might be somewhere nearer coming back. Not for the first time, they are hampered by some key suspensions here though and a draw looks the more likely outcome in what is unlikely to be a classic game.
