Real Madrid travel to Balaidos on Saturday afternoon for a LaLiga clash with Celta Vigo. Los Blancos are fresh from having secured a place in the last eight of the Champions League but they need to secure three points here to put a degree of pressure on Barcelona and Atletico Madrid who play later in the weekend.

Celta are something of a resurgent force though so this will not be an easy game for Los Blancos and it’ll be a good test of the progress the Galician side have made under Chacho Coudet. They come into this game having only lost 1 of their last 8 games and they’ve already impacted on the title race by drawing 2-2 at the Wanda Metropolitano a few weeks back.

Their last two games have been polar opposites. They came out on top in a 4-3 thriller at Huesca before a rather less entertaining 0-0 draw against Athletic Club last time out. Celta are 10th heading into this matchday, 6 points off Villarreal in 7th and they are going to need a really strong end to the campaign if they are going to challenge for European football.

As for Real Madrid, their season continues to meander along without them really convincing, yet without them suffering that seriously damaging defeat that ends their league or Champions League dreams. Karim Benzema has played a pivotal role in ensuring they are still in this title race with vital late goals in their last two league games – to salvage a draw in the derby with Atleti and a late win over Elche.

He was also on target in a comfortable 3-1 win over Atalanta in the UCL in midweek and Los Blancos now have a tie against Liverpool to look forward to after the international break. Some of their most impressive displays this season have come against the stronger teams when it has mattered most, so they can’t be completely ruled out in Europe although they will most likely be underdogs against the Reds, particularly with the home leg likely to be played at a neutral venue.

This has all the makings of a really good game. Real Madrid have not been at their best in LaLiga of late and this is a Celta team that is well capable of asking questions of them. A score draw could be the outcome, although Madrid really do need all three points to keep hanging on in the title race.
