Las Palmas vs Girona Preview
The Friday night game this week in the Segunda Division comes from Gran Canaria where Las Palmas are playing host to Girona. These two sides are ranked 11th and 12th respectively heading into this match. While they are both 7 points off the play-off places, the end to last season showed just how quickly things can change in this league and both coaches will be plotting a strong end to the campaign and a possible late promotion push.
Las Palmas did their hopes the world of good with a 2-1 win away to Fuenlabrada last time out. Given they have one of the worst away records in the division, that was a surprise success in many respects and it came despite them falling behind in just the 2nd minute. 24 year old winger Pejiño was the hero with a brace, although Fuenla were reduced to 10 men in the 2nd Half which helped matters.
In Gran Canaria, Las Palmas have generally been much stronger. They’ve a 57% home win ratio this term in the Segunda Division which certainly gives them a platform to mount a possible play-off push but they do need to start picking up results more consistently on their travels if they are to seriously get in the mix.
As for Girona, their recent form has been disappointing with just 1 win in 7 matches dealing a serious blow to their promotion hopes. There is a bit of pressure building on Francisco now. The former Huesca boss took charge at Montilivi during the run-in last term and guided the team to the Play-Off Final where they lost to Elche. Two wins over Catalan rivals Espanyol have been the highlight of this season but they haven’t done the business regularly enough against the smaller teams.
Montilivi hasn’t been the fortress it was for them last term and they come into this game having taken just one point from their last two matches – both at home against Almeria and Lugo. The more positive spin is that it’s just one defeat in five league games, but they need wins and not draws from this point on if they are going to seriously challenge the top six.

Like so many games in this league, it’s tough to call this one but overall Las Palmas look the more likely victors. They are the team in better overall form and also boast a strong home record with not many teams leaving Gran Canaria with a good result this season. They may just edge it.
