Getafe vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Getafe match action

Having drawn the big Madrid derby last weekend, Atleti travel across the Spanish capital this weekend to take on a struggling Getafe side. This is the fixture with one of the most unbelievable statistics in football with Atleti having gone 19 matches without conceding against Getafe.

Now would be as good a time as any to finally break that duck. Although in truth there is little sign of it from this Getafe side. Only Eibar have scored fewer goals than them in LaLiga 2020/21 with Jose Bordalas’ men having failed to net in 50% of their league outings this term. Their chances of scoring that elusive goal against Atleti aren’t helped by the absence of their joint top scorer Jaime Mata who was sent off having scored Geta’s goal in the 2-1 defeat at Real Valladolid last weekend.

On a more positive note for Getafe, they did put in one of their most convincing showings of the season last time out at the Coliseum. A 3-0 win over Valencia ended a 4 game losing streak in LaLiga and if rumours are to be believed, kept Bordalas in a job. With a 5 point cushion on the drop-zone, Getafe can’t fall into the bottom three this weekend but unless something strange happens here, they could see their advantage cut with some of their fellow strugglers having more favourable fixtures.

They will be up against an Atleti side that has their eyes firmly set on the prize now. Their midweek comeback win over Athletic ensured they have a six point advantage on 2nd placed Barcelona and finally we now have a clearer picture of how this title race is shaping up with all of the top three having played the same number of games.

Unquestionably though, it is Barca that are playing the more convincing football right now whereas Atleti are having to fight to the death in virtually every game. That in truth is nothing new under Diego Simeone and while there is clearly plenty of character in this side, their tendency to drop deep and try to see out games is leading to plenty of broken fingernails amongst Atleti fans and there was a degree of inevitability about Real Madrid’s late equaliser in the derby last weekend.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 6 Atleti Wins.
  • Atletico Madrid have kept 19 consecutive clean sheets against Getafe.
  • They’ve won all 7 meetings since Geta returned to the top flight in 2017.
  • Atleti won the reverse fixture 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano earlier this term.

Team News

Jaime Mata is banned for Getafe but they can welcome Marc Cucurella back from suspension which is a significant boost.

Felipe is suspended for the visitors and with fellow centre-back José Giménez still an injury doubt, that should mean Atleti go with a flat back four in this match.

Predicted Getafe Starting Lineup:

Soria – Olivera, Cabaco, Djene, Suarez – Cucurella, Arambarri, Maksimovic, Nyom – Cucho, Unal (4-4-2)

Predicted Atleti Starting Lineup:

Oblak – Lodi, Hermoso, Savic, Trippier – Carrasco, Llorente, Koke, Correa – Felix, Suarez (4-4-2)

Even in recent seasons, when Getafe have been a genuinely competitive top half side, they’ve struggled to land any real blows on their local rivals and with Mata missing, it’s just very hard to see them breaking that long goalless streak in this fixture. With the likes of Marcos Llorente and Luis Suarez having excellent seasons and providing a genuine goal threat, Atleti should win this game, potentially even with a degree of comfort that has been missing of late.
