Alaves vs Cadiz Preview

Saturday’s action in LaLiga kicks off in Vitoria with a massive game at the bottom of the table. Alaves are now in the bottom three and in deep trouble and they won’t get many better chances to put three points on the board than this. Victory would also drag Cadiz back towards the relegation scrap.
Alaves looked to be on their way to a priceless three points on Monday. They were 2-0 up heading into the final half hour at the Benito Villamarin after goals from Joselu and Edgar Mendez put them in control in Seville. However a stunning Betis comeback saw the game end 3-2 in favour of the hosts, condemning Alaves to a fourth straight league defeat.
It’s safe to say the mood on the trip back to the Basque Country would not have been positive in the Alaves camp. Abelardo now faces a real task to lift his players again for what is a genuine six-pointer against a Cadiz side that is five places and six points better off at kick-off. Put simply, these are the kind of games Alaves are going to have to win if they are going to ultimately win their fight for survival.
Cadiz are fresh from having won one of these key relegation duels last time out. They could potentially have slipped into the bottom three last weekend, also depending on the results of other games, but ultimately it was a terrific matchday for the Andalusians as Alvaro Negredo’s goal sealed a 1-0 home win against Eibar. It was a much needed result having taken just one point from their previous six games.
Although they have faded as the season has gone on, as was largely the case in the Segunda Division last year, the finish line is in sight for Alvaro Cervera’s men. It might only take a couple more wins to ensure Cadiz do survive on their return to LaLiga after more than a decade away. Realistically that was their only objective this term, although they’d most likely be very content with a point here to keep their advantage on their opponents to six points.

The stakes are high here but there’s not enough about either team right now to suggest they will get the win. Alaves lack the belief we saw during Abelardo’s first spell at the club while Cadiz’s fine early season away form is increasingly a thing of the past. A draw looks the most likely outcome which would suit the visitors more than the hosts.
