Sporting Gijon vs Mallorca Preview

Sporting Gijon stadium

The big game at the top this weekend in the Segunda Division comes from El Molinon. It sees Sporting Gijon, boasting an unbeaten home record, take on Real Mallorca who haven’t lost away. The outcome will have a significant impact on how things look at the top with the hosts trying to get back into the thick of the automatic promotion race while Mallorca are threatening to pull clear at the top.

Following 4th, 9th and 13th place finishes in the last three seasons, David Gallego has stopped the decline at Sporting and got them firmly back into what their fans will believe is their rightful position of challenging for a return to the top flight. In a less competitive season, they might be even higher than their current 5th place and it’s going to be tough for them to break into the top two with three strong sides relegated from LaLiga last term plus Almeria ahead of them.

Sporting do take good form into this though. They are unbeaten in 6 games and have started to put in some better away showings which will be key if they want to seriously challenge for promotion and be competitive in the play-offs which is where they will most likely end up. Their return of 15 points from their last 8 games, is only bettered by Leganes and this weekend’s opponents Mallorca.

The visitors are flying with 6 wins from their last 7. Despite losing a key home game against fellow promotion contenders Espanyol in the middle of that run, the defeat hasn’t knocked them off course at all and subsequent victories over Almeria, Logrones and Cartagena have seen Mallorca move 5 points clear at the top of the table.

Were they to become the first visiting team to win a league match at El Molinon this season, that really would send a message to the rest of the league and depending on other results this weekend, they could go as much as 9 points clear of 3rd. It’ll be interesting to see how Luis Garcia approaches what is their toughest remaining fixture with Mallorca having only one more game against top six opposition after this.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Meetings: 4 Sporting Wins, 1 Mallorca Win, 1 Draw.
  • The sides drew 0-0 in the Balearic Islands earlier this term.
  • Sporting have won all of the last 3 meetings at El Molinon with Mallorca having 3 players sent off across those games.

Sporting Gijon vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Sporting Gijon 0-0 Mallorca

It’s impossible to pick a winner here with Sporting so strong at home and Mallorca likewise on their travels. Unless Sporting boss David Gallego really believes his side are good enough to challenge for automatic promotion, both coaches might just be happy enough to leave the game with a point and their respective unbeaten records intact.
