Borussia Dortmund vs Sevilla Preview

Sevilla travel to Germany on Tuesday for the 2nd Leg of their UEFA Champions League Last 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund. They do so in considerably worse spirits than they were in prior to the 1st Leg with Julen Lopetegui’s side having faltered badly over recent weeks. They need a huge performance here to turn this tie around.
Prior to that 1st Leg in Andalusia, Sevilla had won 9 in a row in all competitions, conceding only one goal. However it’s safe to say they hadn’t come up against a striker like Erling Haaland during that period. The Norwegian was in a destructive mood, scoring a brace as Dortmund raced into a 3-1 Half-Time lead at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Sevilla largely dominated the 2nd Half and grabbed a lifeline via Luuk de Jong’s late goal but still have a mountain to climb in Germany.
Since that 1st Leg, Sevilla have lost 3 out of 4 in all competitions, including a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in the 2nd Leg of their Copa del Rey Semi-Final. Two league defeats have also ended what was threatening to be an unlikely title challenge. The most recent was a shock 2-1 loss to struggling Elche in a game where Julen Lopetegui rotated heavily suggesting he still thinks they have a realistic chance of fighting back in Dortmund.
Borussia Dortmund had no such luxury in terms of rotation given their weekend league game was Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich. It was largely a tale of two strikers. Haaland scored another early brace – this time inside ten minutes to put Dortmund 2-0 up at the Allianz Arena. However Bayern were almost completely dominant after that with a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick helping them fight back to win 4-2.
Edin Terzić’s side have won all of their other games since the 1st leg but they are only 6th in the Bundesliga having lost 9 times already this term in the league. That should offer some encouragement to Sevilla in that they are not up against a truly elite team nor one with the defensive qualities required to easily kill this tie off but it’s clearly still a big ask for Julen Lopetegui’s men.

Borussia Dortmund vs Sevilla Predictions
Score Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Sevilla (5-4 Dortmund on aggregate)
Sevilla are not out of this tie and are capable of competing against what in truth is not a vintage Borussia Dortmund side. The absence of Jadon Sancho in particular ought to make it more difficult for the hosts to supply their red hot striker and their defence is vulnerable. Sevilla have enough quality to score at least once in this game but it’s hard to see them keeping Haaland quiet for 90 minutes and overall, Borussia ought to finish the job and progress into the last eight.
