We are getting closer to the home stretch of the 2020/21 LaLiga season and there are going to be some huge games at the bottom of the table between now and May which may ultimately determine which teams go down. This is one of them as 17th placed Real Valladolid host a Getafe side that claimed a much needed win last time out.

Real Valladolid are certainly one of the clubs that looks in danger of dropping down into the Segunda Division. They’ve won just four times all season in the league and only twice at home. Indeed you have to go all the way back to the reverse fixture against Getafe for their last success – a 1-0 triumph at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in their first game of this calendar year.

The advantage that Sergio’s side may have on one or two others near the foot of the table, is that this is a battle-hardened side, one with plenty of experience when it comes to fighting against relegation and ultimately succeeding. They avoided the drop late on in the 2018/19 season and although it was slightly more comfortable last term, they spent most of the campaign in the bottom half.

Getafe have been more used to competing for Europe than battling relegation since they returned to the top flight in 2017. There have been genuine concerns this season though, although a much more convincing performance in a 3-0 win at home to Valencia last time out has eased those fears. 

The South Madrid club went into the game having only registered one attempt on target in their previous four matches, all of which ended in defeat. However they pulled a performance out of the bag, just when they and particularly their coach needed it. There were strong murmurings that Jose Bordalas may have been sacked had Getafe lost that game but he will have slept easier this week and another victory here would propel them into mid-table.

This is unlikely to be one for the neutrals. Getafe’s three-goal showing last time out was certainly more the exception than the norm for a side that has been toothless in front of goal for much of the 2020/21 season. They still have the joint worst goalscoring record in the league despite that and Real Valladolid aren’t much better. This is likely to be a cautious affair that may end goalless.
