There’s an important game at the bottom of LaLiga on Saturday as Cadiz and Eibar face off on the south coast of Spain. While Cadiz haven’t really been involved in the thick of the relegation scrap this season, defeat here would certainly change that and it’s a genuine six-pointer with important consequences for both teams.

Cadiz followers would have gone through a wide range of emotions over the past twelve months. They ultimately stuttered somewhat en-route to winning promotion before getting off to a flying start on their long awaited top flight return. However memories of those four straight away wins and the toppling of Barcelona at the Ramon de Carranza are increasingly distant with Cadiz sliding down the league towards danger.

Since beating Alaves in early January, Cadiz have taken just 2 points from 7 league games. One of these came in surprising circumstances in the reverse clash with Barcelona but their overall form really has tailed off. Alvaro Cervera may be quick to point out that they have had a very tough run of games with 5 of their last 6 against top six teams and the exception being a home clash with a resurgent Athletic. They have some easier fixtures coming up, including in theory this one, but they really do need to rediscover some of that early season resilience.

Eibar will sense an opportunity here and their need for the points is even more pressing. They are only outside the relegation zone on goal difference heading into the weekend and have gone even longer without a league win. Not since their opening match of 2021 – at home to Granada – have the Basque side tasted victory in LaLiga.

It’s just 3 points from 8 games since then and significantly they have played a lot of the teams around them. Real Valladolid, Huesca and Elche have been their last three opponents and with the fixtures getting much tougher after this one, José Luis Mendilibar may feel as though even a point isn’t really enough here.
