Barcelona vs Sevilla Preview

Camp Nou

The Copa del Rey Semi-Final 2nd Leg between Barcelona and Sevilla takes place at Camp Nou on Wednesday and it’s very nicely poised. The Andalusians are 2-0 from the 1st Leg and will be the favourites to progress but Ronald Koeman’s Barça were impressive 2-0 victors when the sides met again at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in LaLiga at the weekend.

Goals from Ousmane Dembele and the very much back in-form Leo Messi sealed a deserved victory for the Catalans. With the title race still in the hands of Atletico Madrid, Barcelona really need to overturn this deficit and make the Final if they want to retain a realistic hope of getting their hands on silverware this season.

Two of Barça’s last three home games have seen them win by the kind of margin that would see them advance here. However those were games against limited Alaves and Elche sides and it will be much tougher going against a strong Sevilla outfit. Their weekend win in Seville, not to mention their ability to come back from 2-0 down in the 1st Leg to win a Copa del Rey tie between these clubs two years ago, ought to give Barcelona some belief. However you can never be quite sure what to expect from this team or indeed this club at the moment in what has been another dramatic week off the pitch.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how Sevilla approach this. While they were perhaps fortunate to claim a two goal winning margin, their 1st Leg showing was further evidence that they do now back themselves to mix it with the elite. An away goal here would leave Barça needing four so Julen Lopetegui must decide whether to adopt a relatively positive gameplan and target that potentially decisive away goal or whether to sit deep and frustrate their opponents.

Much like their opponents, Sevilla’s hopes of a trophy now also appears to largely depend on this competition. They also lost the home leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund while their weekend defeat means an unlikely title challenge is now surely out of the question. Overall though, Sevilla have been in good form and they’ve been travelling well, winning 12 of their last 14 away fixtures in all competitions. They’ve only once lost an away match by more than a two goal margin during Lopetegui’s reign but somewhat ominously that was on this ground – a 4-0 defeat in LaLiga in October 2019.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Sevilla Win, 3 Barcelona Wins, 2 Draws.
  • This will be the third meeting in 2021 with both sides having recorded 2-0 wins at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
  • Sevilla won the 1st Leg of this tie three weeks ago while the Catalans were victorious in LaLiga at the weekend.
  • Barcelona have won 5 of their last 6 home games vs Sevilla – 3 of which were by 3+ goal margins, however Julen Lopetegui’s team did draw at Camp Nou earlier this term in LaLiga.

Barcelona vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Sevilla (Sevilla to win 3-2 on aggregate)

This should be a really interesting night and it will be a test of the character and quality of both teams. The Copa del Rey takes on real significance for both now given the state of their league and European campaigns. Barcelona ought to win on the night but Sevilla are no longer the soft touch away from home that crumbled here in the 2nd Leg of a Copa del Rey tie two years ago. Julen Lopetegui’s side look capable of getting the away goal which ought to be enough to ensure they progress to the Final.
