Getafe vs Valencia Preview

Getafe match action

Getafe and Valencia renew their hostilities on Saturday evening in LaLiga. While as recently as a couple of seasons ago, these sides were battling for Champions League places, the tables have really turned since then with both sides enduring pretty miserable 2020/21 campaigns for different reasons.

Both sides are in the bottom half heading into this match and not completely clear of the relegation scrap. Getafe certainly are in some danger of being sucked right into the battle for safety given they only currently have a 3 point advantage for the bottom three. The wheels really have come off in recent weeks for Pepe Bordalas and his team with just one point from their last six league games.

There are several reasons for their demise but ultimately they should have enough quality in this squad to beat the drop. Bordalas has tried to get back to basics in recent weeks, reverting to a 4-4-2 and relegating January signings Take Kubo and Carles Alena to the subs bench but it hasn’t helped to stem the tide of defeats with a 1-0 loss at Betis on Monday their latest setback.

Valencia’s season took a turn for the better last weekend. Goalless heading into Stoppage Time against 10-man Celta Vigo, there was late drama at Mestalla as Los Che found 94th and 98th minute goals via Manu Vallejo and Kevin Gameiro to claim a 2-0 win.

That result gives them a 6 point cushion on the relegation zone and they will move onto 30 points with another victory here. The doomsday scenario of dropping down into the Segunda Division now seems unlikely but there are still uncertain times ahead for followers of Los Che and with almost certainly no European football in 2021/22, we could yet see more key players depart this summer to plunge the club further into crisis.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Getafe Wins, 1 Valencia Win, 3 Draws.
  • A dramatic finish resulted in a 2-2 draw when the sides met at Mestalla earlier this term.
  • The last 5 meetings have produced 5 red cards in total.
  • Getafe have won 3 of their last 4 home games vs Valencia in all competitions.

Team News

Getafe ought to be at full strength here but we could see some personnel changes from Monday’s game.

Denis Cheryshev is still a doubt for the visitors but Mouctar Diakhaby has been passed fit.

Predicted Getafe Starting Lineup:

Soria – Olivera, Chakla, Djene, Nyom – Cucurella, Maksimovic, Arambarri, Kubo – Mata, Cucho (4-4-2)

Predicted Valencia Starting Lineup:

Domenech – Gaya, Guillamon, Gabriel, Correia – Racic, Soler – Vallejo, Kang-in, Wass – Gomez (4-2-3-1)

Getafe vs Valencia Predictions

LaLiga Expert Predicts: Getafe 0-0 Valencia

More than anything, this will be quite a sad occasion in many respects given how strong these sides used to be and the state they are in now. Valencia aren’t convincing enough to suggest they will come here and exert much control on this game but Getafe are almost devoid of any goal threat right now and a goalless stalemate could be the outcome.
