Atletico Madrid vs Levante Preview
Atletico Madrid and Levante meet again in LaLiga, just three days after facing off in Valencia. Even in a strange season such as this, the staging of back-to-back league games against the same opposition is unique and there’s pressure on Atleti to put in a better showing this Saturday.
Wednesday’s clash ended in a 1-1 draw at the Ciutat de Valencia with Marcos Llorente chalking out Enis Bardhi’s goal. This time, there’d be no 2nd Half winner for Diego Simeone’s side who have now dropped points in 2 of their last 3 league matches to offer up some hope to the other teams in the title race.
It’s probably too premature to call this a serious blip and Atleti do still have a 6 point advantage at the top with a game in hand on 2nd placed Real Madrid. This though could be another match where there is the potential for dropped points with Levante having proven to be no pushovers, while Atleti are still dealing with a number of selection issues and will have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Chelsea.
Levante have already had quite an impact on the battle at the top of the table, having already won in Madrid in 2021 – seeing off Los Blancos 2-1 at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. They’ve only lost one of their last seven league games and have also made excellent progress in the Copa del Rey with a Semi-Final 2nd Leg against Athletic just around the corner.
Overall, they haven’t been too convincing on their travels this term, taking only 0.91 points per game on the road. They do feel like they are a team which is developing nicely though with Jorge de Frutos a breakout star with 7 assists now this season, the joint most in LaLiga along with Atleti’s Marcos Llorente.
