The Monday night game in LaLiga this week comes from the southern shores of Spain as Cadiz entertain Athletic Club. The visitors have made significant strides forward under Marcelino and the recently appointed boss now faces the task of ensuring all their cup distractions do not impede on their league form.

Cadiz meanwhile, for perhaps the first time this season, are now in a situation where they really will be starting to look over their shoulders at the relegation scrap. 3 straight league defeats and 11 goals conceded, means they are suddenly just 3 points above the bottom three and there’s plenty of work to be done before they can celebrate surviving a top flight campaign for the first time since the early 1990’s.

They are currently in the midst of a really tough run of games with those 3 defeats having come against Sevilla, Atletico and Real Sociedad – all top six teams. However it does feel as though the element of surprise that caught some opponents cold earlier in the campaign has been lost and they are certainly looking more vulnerable defensively.

Athletic will be hoping to exploit that and they have looked much more threatening in the final third since the coaching switch. 4-4-2 is working for now with Raul Garcia and Inaki Williams forming an effective strike pairing. With the former turning 35 this year and doubts over the latter’s suitability to the role, it may not be a long-term fix but they are currently posing problems for opposing teams.

Despite their cup heroics, it is only 4 points from 4 league games for Athletic since the coaching switch. They’ve only won once away in the league all season and victory in this kind of game would be another clear sign of progression under Marcelino’s leadership.

Cadiz vs Athletic Club Predictions

Score Prediction: Cadiz 1-2 Athletic Club

Cadiz don’t fully convince at the moment and they aren’t helped by a number of selection problems. Athletic have looked reinvigorated under Marcelino and while they’ve had to play a lot of games, they would have benefited from this one being moved to a Monday more than Cadiz and they don’t play again until Sunday so they can afford to really target this game. Athletic may just have the edge.
