Granada vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Granada vs Atletico Madrid match preview

This could be a significant game in this season’s title race. Atletico Madrid were almost an unstoppable force throughout the first half of the season, working up a huge advantage at the top to put themselves in a position from which they should go on and win the title. However a Covid-19 outbreak in the Atleti camp leaves them short on numbers for this match and potentially the upcoming double-header against Levante too.

Granada know all about that. They are the only team in LaLiga that has been forced to play a game with a squad so depleted that it was never seriously going to be able to compete. That was the 2-0 defeat at Real Sociedad in November – the start of a 3 game losing streak in LaLiga. Their form has been mixed since then with 4 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats from their subsequent 12 league games.

Essentially, Granada find themselves where they were last season – competing for a possible 7th place. They ought to be better equipped to compete for it this time around, although much will depend on how far they go in this season’s Europa League, with a huge clash against Napoli coming up next week at Los Carmenes as the knockout stages resume.

Atleti have an extra week before they return to Champions League action against Chelsea and they certainly need it with the likes of Joao Felix, Mario Hermoso and Thomas Lemar sidelined due to Covid. That played its part in their inability to see off Celta Vigo at the Wanda Metropolitano on Monday.

The familiar tale of Luis Suarez turning the game around with a brace looked to have secured a 9th straight league win for Atleti but they were undone by a last gasp Facundo Ferreyra strike which has just offered a glimmer of hope to Atleti’s rivals at the top of LaLiga.

Granada vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Granada 2-2 Atletico Madrid

Atleti have gone 4 games without a clean sheet now in LaLiga, a slight worry for Diego Simeone and they’ve let in 2 in each of their last 2 games. With the Covid problems and up against a very competitive Granada side, this could be a tough afternoon for Los Rojiblancos and they may have to settle for a point again.
