Lugo vs Espanyol Preview

On Monday evening Vicente Moreno’s Espanyol travel to Galicia to play Mehdi Nafti’s Lugo in the Anxo Carro. Looking at recent results we could be in for a fun game.
Lugo will be going into this match looking to pick up points. Since Head Coach Mehdi Nafti’s arrival they have been fantastic at home and looking at where they are in the table now, this is mainly due to their great home form. However in their last outing they came unstuck against a tricky Leganes side. Forward Manuel Barreiro was back on the scoresheet bagging a brace but it was a little too late as they lost 3-2 in an exciting match.
To boost their attacking options, Los Albivermellos did bring in former Nottingham Forrest academy graduate Arvin Appiah in on loan from Almería until the end of the season. Mehdi Nafti knows this fixture is going to be tough and his players will need to be at their best, if they are going to get a positive result.
It has been a crazy couple of weeks for Espanyol. At the start of the year they found themselves top of the league but fast forward a few weeks and they are now third and six points off leaders Real Mallorca who they play next week. A win here is a must if they want to make the ground back up.
In their last outing against Rayo Vallecano they played some great stuff and at half time it was all comfortable, leading by two goals and the game looked done. Rayo came out in the Second Half all guns blazing though and Espanyol were sleeping and couldn’t get going again. Only when Rayo scored the third did they fully wake up but by then it was too late. At the final whistle Vicente Moreno’s men looked broken. They will be asking themselves how they lost that and won’t be forgetting the 1-0 loss to Girona either. The Blanquiazules really need to dust themselves down and get on the winning path again if they are to stand a chance of making the automatic promotion spots.
Espanyol did make one signing in the transfer window by adding Belgian attacker Landry Dimata on loan from Anderlecht until the end of the season. The Congolese born attacker will bring a different dynamic to the attack and right now that is something they need.
Head to Head
- Espanyol won 2-1 when the sides met at the RCDE Stadium earlier this term.
- The sides hadn’t previously met this century.
Lugo vs Espanyol Predictions
Score Prediction: Lugo 1-2 Espanyol
Espanyol cannot really afford another upset. Vicente Moreno’s side will be cautious and that could play into Lugo’s hands but in the end the Blanquiazules have enough firepower and experience to get the job done here.
