Fuenlabrada vs Almeria Preview
The latest chapter in what is turning into a really fierce battle for automatic promotion from the Spanish Segunda Division takes place at the Estadio Fernando Torres on Saturday. Almeria were the final lower league team to be eliminated from the Copa del Rey in midweek and they can now put all their eggs in one basket and focus on the task of trying to win promotion to LaLiga.
In opposition here, they have a Fuenlabrada side that only this week sacked their coach Jose Ramon Sandoval. While he did a really good job of turning their season around in 2019/20, Fuenla have been less convincing this term with just 1 win from their last 8 league games.
Even so, Sandoval can probably feel unfortunate to have lost his job given they’ve continued to accumulate points via drawing plenty of games and sit comfortably in mid-table, not bad for a small club in only their second ever season at this level. The new man is the well travelled José Luis Oltra, who was most recently in charge of Racing Santander during the latter period of last season, failing to keep them in the Segunda.
Almeria will fear something of a new manager bounce but if they can keep up performing as they have been, this is still a game they will fancy they can win. They’ve collected maximum points in 11 of their last 14 Segunda Division games to propel themselves into the thick of the scrap for automatic promotion.
A 70% away win ratio this term in the league has been key to their success and overall they look a more balanced side than they did last season despite the departure of the very talented Darwin Nunez. They were narrowly beaten by Sevilla earlier in the week in the Copa but they should have had sufficient recovery time to go again here on the outskirts of the Spanish capital.

You can never be quite sure how a team will react to a managerial switch and this felt like quite a strange change to make with Sandoval widely perceived to have done a good job. Almeria are a really strong side at this level and they may just have enough to edge this and record an 8th away league win of the campaign.
