The Friday night action in LaLiga commences at Mendizorrotza. It’s not exactly a game that will get neutrals excited as we head into another busy weekend of Spanish football but it’s a big one for Alaves, Real Valladolid and their respective coaches. It’s 18th vs 16th and with just one point separating the clubs.

Alaves really need a good result. Things haven’t gone to plan since they sacked Pablo Machin and brought Abelardo back to the club last month. Three defeats and one draw with only two goals scored and 11 conceded hasn’t exactly been the happy homecoming he’d have been looking for although it hasn’t been an easy start with Real Madrid and Sevilla having visited Vitoria.

We did see some improvement in Alaves last weekend though as they ground out a dour 0-0 draw at Getafe and another week on the training ground may just have helped Abelardo further get his ideas across to some of those who weren’t at the club during his first reign. Alaves haven’t won in the league since beating Eibar in December and this feels pretty close to a ‘must win’ game for them.

Real Valladolid couldn’t come into this match after a worse result. They were beaten 3-1 at home by bottom club Huesca last time out, a desperate scoreline for Sergio’s side. Having let in 4 at home to Levante in the Copa del Rey a few days earlier, it’s very apparent now that this is no longer a Real Valladolid side with solid defensive foundations as we’ve seen in the previous two years.

That can only spell trouble as we move deeper into the campaign and you have to fear for them a bit. They added Lucas Olaza and Kenan Kodro late in the window but those aren’t really deals that are likely to have a massively transformational effect on this team.

Alaves vs Real Valladolid Predictions

Score Prediction: Alaves 2-0 Real Valladolid

Real Valladolid aren’t looking at all convincing right now. After a hectic start, Abelardo has had a couple of midweeks free of matches to get his ideas across on the training ground, and we should see something more akin to the Alaves of old that was so tough to beat at home during his first spell in charge. This could be the perfect fixture to kickstart his second stint at the Basque club.
