Almeria vs Sevilla Preview
The Copa del Rey Quarter-Finals kick off on Tuesday with an Andalusian derby at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos. Almeria, the only remaining team from outside the top flight, are looking to upset Sevilla and emulate Mirandes’ achievement last season of reaching the Semi-Finals as a Segunda Division side.
Almeria’s story is quite the same plucky underdog one though. They have the kind of financial muscle that would be the envy of even some clubs at the lower end of the top flight and this may very well be a LaLiga fixture again in 2021/22. Almeria are currently 3rd in the Segunda Division and involved in a fierce battle with Espanyol and Mallorca for automatic promotion.
While a cup run does raise the prospect of causing a distraction to that bid, opportunities to progress into a Copa del Rey Semi-Final don’t come around too often and they’ll want to make the most of it. Indeed this is only the second time they’ve even made the last eight. Almeria have already seen off two top flight sides in this cup run, hammering Alaves 5-0 before a shootout win against Osasuna in the last round.
Sevilla will signal a significant step up in class though. Julen Lopetegui’s side will have their eyes set on more cup glory this season and they are second favourites for the competition now behind Barcelona. Despite the strong season they are having, Sevilla were taken to Extra Time by second tier Leganes in the 3rd Round before they breezed past Valencia last week to book their Quarter-Final place.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about Sevilla right now, is their ability to travel and consistently win matches. They’ve won 10 of their last 12 away games in all competitions, the most recent of which was a 2-0 league win at Eibar on Saturday. They look like a really robust outfit that continues to find enough to claim victories.

Score Prediction: Almeria 0-1 Sevilla
Almeria are a really strong Segunda side and this game won’t necessarily be any easier than recent away games Sevilla have had in LaLiga. However there’s a consistency to Los Nervionenses and they just look like a team that won’t struggle with this kind of task. Sevilla ought to book their place in the last four.
