Getafe vs Alaves Preview

Getafe vs Alaves match preview

Sunday’s Spanish football action kicks off at the Coliseum with a clash between Getafe and Alaves. Both teams come into the game following heavy defeats so it’s going to be interesting to see who responds the best here.

Getafe have for the first time since their return to the top flight in 2017, made a really noticeable shift in terms of how they line up this month. The loan signings of Take Kubo and Carles Alena brought about a move from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 and it seemed to do the trick as Jose Bordalas’ side recorded two much needed league wins against Elche and Huesca.

However on Monday night in Bilbao, they were blown away by Athletic – losing 5-1, an almost unthinkable scoreline for a side that has always been so strong defensively. Bordalas isn’t likely to just revert back to two lines of four here, but he will be conscious of the need to make this transition without losing those key ingredients that essentially made Getafe ‘Getafe’.

Meanwhile his opposite number is desperately trying to recreate the environment that saw Alaves enjoy a terrific period of 18 months or so when Abelardo was previously at the club. Since returning earlier this month, Alaves have endured a rotten run of results, conceding 11 in 3 games, losing the lot.

Abelardo will at least have had a full week to try and instill his ideas in this team on the training ground thanks to their early cup exit. Given their last two league defeats were against Real Madrid and Sevilla, he may argue this is the first game where it’s fair to pass judgement on his return, but he certainly needs to find some solutions quickly with Alaves currently in the relegation zone.

Djene is suspended which is a significant blow for Getafe. Erick Cabaco, Chema and Mathias Olivera are expected to be missing due to COVID-19 leaving them very short on defensive options.

Edgar Mendez is Alaves’ main absentee due to suspension.

Predicted Getafe Starting Lineup:

Yanez – Nyom, Etxeita, Alba, Suarez – Maksimovic, Arambarri – Cucurella, Alena, Kubo – Mata (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:

Pacheco – Duarte, Lejeune, Laguardia, Navarro – Rioja, Pina, Battaglia, Aguirregabiria – Joselu, Perez (4-4-2)

Getafe vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Getafe 1-2 Alaves

Just when things were looking up for Getafe, they collapsed at San Mames in a manner that was most unlike them. That will concern Bordalas and he has some significant selection issues here at the back. We ought to see a stronger showing and something of a reaction from Alaves and they may just get their first win back under Abelardo’s guidance.
