Athletic are hoping to avoid the same fate as the one suffered by Real Madrid when they travel to face Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey this week. The victors will take the final place in the Quarter-Finals and will be just two rounds away from a Final in Seville later this season.
That’s still a distant dream as far as Segunda B Alcoyano are concerned, but having seen off the mighty Real Madrid, they’ve no reason to fear anyone left in the competition. The hundred year old Estadio El Collao is a modest venue and while it did once host top flight football, Alcoyano today are a club that should be in no position to compete with teams of the stature of Madrid and Athletic.
José Juan, the goalkeeper who was one of their heroes last week against Los Blancos, has turned 42 since that game and he will be expected to be a busy man again on Thursday evening. Alcoyano have also knocked out top flight Huesca in this run to the last 16 and for now their main focus will be on extending this remarkable journey, even as they continue to battle in the top half of their group in the Segunda B.
It has also been a terrific start to 2021 for Athletic Club with Marcelino coming in and seemingly turning their fortunes around. They beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to lift the Supercopa and they will feel as though they have every chance of adding more silverware to their cabinet this season. They still have the 2020 Copa del Rey Final to play and will be well placed to reach the 2021 edition if they can get passed the side from the small Valencian city of Alcoy.
Athletic put in a top draw performance to smash five goals past Getafe on Monday night in LaLiga. Having fallen behind in the very first minute, a brace from a revitalised Raul Garcia helped the Basques come back to seal a convincing 5-1 win and all does seem to be well in Bilbao right now. We may see some rotation here but they still managed to see off Ibiza 2-1 in the last round in similar circumstances.

Score Prediction: Alcoyano 1-2 Athletic Club
Nothing in this year’s Copa del Rey can be seen as a foregone conclusion but Athletic appear to have found an extra gear under Marcelino and crucially they are starting to play well and get good results away from San Mames. We rarely saw that under Gaizka Garitano and with the momentum they take into this, they ought to see off an Alcoyano side that are currently 10 points behind Ibiza, who Athletic beat last week, in their section of the Segunda B.
